Princess Kate will be shying away from public duties “until after Easter” following a “planned abdominal surgery, Kensington Palace announced Wednesday.

Princess Kate asked for privacy amid her recovery even as the statement gave no indication what the surgery was.

“She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private,” the statement read.

Perhaps in a move to help facilitate that privacy, the palace also dropped news that King Charles III was having a procedure right around the same time.

The “surgery was successful,” Kensington Palace said, but “based on the current medical advice,” the Princess of Wales is “unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter.”

The statement says Kate “looks forward to reinstating as many (engagements) as possible, as soon as possible.”

According to CBS News, the princess is generally healthy and active, enjoying a range of sports, but during all three of her pregnancies she suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness which left her unable to attend royal events in the weeks before her deliveries.

Following news of the ‘planned abdominal surgery’, social media has been inundated with searches to understand what is going on.

None has been more prevalent that Kate Middleton tummy tuck.

What is abdominal surgery?

According to physio.co.uk, “abdominal surgery includes any type of surgery that involves opening the abdomen area,”

The main types of abdominal surgery include:

Laparotomy: opening the abdominal cavity during surgery to identify any bleeding or damage in the area. The abdominal cavity contains organs such as the stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, small and large intestines and kidneys. Surgery can therefore involve any of the above organs if necessary.

Appendectomy: the abdominal cavity is opened and the appendix removed. This may be due to appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix) or before a different abdominal procedure.

Laparoscopy: this type of surgery is minimally invasive and small incisions (cuts) are made in the abdomen to insert tiny cameras which help the surgeon identify any problems.

Cholecystectomy: this is removal of the gallbladder by laparoscopic surgery and is the most common minimally invasive surgery.

Bowel Resection: surgery to remove part of the bowel.

Is the tummy tuck a type of abdominal surgery Kate Middleton could have gone for?

Yes, the tummy tuck is also known as abdominoplasty and is a cosmetic surgical procedure to improve the shape and appearance of the abdomen.

During a tummy tuck, excess skin and fat are removed from the abdomen.

Connective tissue in the abdomen (fascia) usually is tightened with sutures as well. The remaining skin is then repositioned to create a more toned look.

You might choose to have a tummy tuck if you have excess fat or skin around the area of your bellybutton or a weak lower abdominal wall.

A tummy tuck can also boost your body image.

The fact is Kate could very well have gone for a tummy tuck but without a statement confirming it from the Palace, we would have to rely on our own speculations.

Meanwhile, a day after the news of the surgery, it emerged that Middleton’s husband Prince William had cancelled committments to spend more time with the kids.

“William has canceled two out of the country appearances and will be taking more of the childcare duties for him and Kate,” a source told Us Weekly.

“Kate has canceled her upcoming appearances and is currently healing.”

William, Kate and their three children – Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5. – last appeared publicly together at the annual walk to Christmas Day church service in Sandringham in December.

Many people are wondering what is wrong with Kate Middleton?

Some think Kate Middleton is going for a tummy tuck whilst others even think she had surgery due to a sort of cancer!

Online, we have spotted a couple articles from the past which spoke about Kate possibly going for a tummy tuck post the birth of her second child.

The first was from USA Today which noted that her body had a bit more in the abdomen following her second child.

“As Kate and William showed off the royal baby, what caught the eye of many women was not the new heir to the throne but the Duchess of Cambridge’s post-childbirth silhouette: that little bump under her pretty polka-dot dress,” the publication wrote.

“I love that she came out and there was a mommy tummy. It was there! We all saw it!” said Lyss Stern of New York City, who remembers turning down offers of a girdle and diet pills after her first child was born nine years ago.

And another article said she was outright planning the procedure after her birth.

Der Speigel wrote: “While Kate Middleton may be preparing for the birth of her second child with Prince William, there is much gossip doing the rounds regarding possible baby names, its gender and even the date that he or she is due to be born. However, additional rumors seem to be circulating regarding her post-baby body plan, which is said to include a possible tummy tuck surgery, exercise routines and even extra recovery time,”

They added: “The Duchess of Cambridge certainly wouldn’t be the first member of royalty to have plastic surgery performed – in fact; Camilla Parker-Bowles underwent major facelift surgery two years ago as well. Plans to welcome the new baby into the royal family are moving quickly. It’s been reported that the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington is already preparing for Kate’s arrival when she goes into labor, while Kensington Palace will also be working with the protocol that was put in place after Prince George was born. Although a few security-related changes have been made, the public can expect that same presentation of the second royal baby,”

So it could very well be that these plans are now being fulfilled by Her Royal Highness with her ‘planned abdominal surgery’ which contains no other details and a request for privacy!
