Wendy Weil Rush is an American pilot and substitute teacher, the wife of Oceangate Expeditions Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Stockton Rush.

Wendy Rush was born to Dr. and Mrs. Richard Weil of Denver. Her father, Dr Weil was a professor of surgery and director of transplantation at the University of Colorado Medical School whilst her mother, Polly Weil, was a partner in the Denver interior design firm of Reynolds & Weil.

He was an alum of Princeton University. He graduated from the institution in 1984 with a BSE in Aerospace, Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering.

OceanGate is a privately held U.S. company operating out of Everett, Washington, that provides crewed submersibles for industry, research and exploration. In 2021, OceanGate began taking paying customers to visit the Titanic shipwreck in its Titan submersible.

In 2022, the cost of an OceanGate expedition to the Titanic shipwreck was US$250,000 per person.

On 18 June 2023, contact with the Titan was lost during a mission to view the Titanic shipwreck with Stockton Rush amongst five people onboard.

The sub disappeared on Sunday, June 18, 2023, while diving to reach the Titanic shipwreck, and the U.S. Coast Guard and others launched a search to find it before the vessel runs out of oxygen in the ocean deep.

Others onboard include British billionaire Hamish Harding, former French Navy diver Paul-Henry Nargeolet and the Chief Executive officer of OceanGate Expeditions, Stockton Rush.

The missing submarine, named Titan, is operated by Oceangate Expeditions, the company both Stockton Rush and his wife works for.

In a 6pm update on Tuesday June 20th, Captain Jamie Frederick said the search for the vessel, called Titan, had not yielded any results so far.

An ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle) has been deployed at the site and has a camera on board. Several research vessels with “ROV capabilities are making preparations to join the efforts”, Mr Frederick said.

A unified command has been set up, consisting of “expertise from the United States Coast Guard, the United States Navy, Canadian Armed Forces and Coast Guard, and the Titan’s parent company, Ocean Gate Expeditions”, Mr Frederick said.

US President Joe Biden is “watching events closely” surrounding the missing submersible near the wreckage of the Titanic, the White House said Tuesday.

At the moment, the sub is expected to run out of air by Thursday morning.

OceanGate wrote in a statement on its Facebook page, “We are exploring and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely. Our entire focus is on the crewmembers in the submersible and their families. We are deeply thankful for the extensive assistance we have received from several government agencies and deep sea companies in our efforts to reestablish contact with the submersible. We are working toward the safe return of the crewmembers.”

Joan Adler, the executive director of the Straus Historical Society, told the Times that Wendy was related to one of the Straus’ daughters on her father’s side.

A great-grandson of Isidor and Ida Straus, Paul A. Kurzman told the Today Show in 2017 that Isidor and Ida Straus were first-class passengers on the Titanic who chose to die together when the ship started sinking after hitting an iceberg.

As shown in James Cameron’s Titanic, women and children were given priority to board the lifeboats. However, Kurzman said that a ship’s officer made an exception for Isidor because of his age and who he was.

“And, my great-grandfather said, ‘No. Until I see that every woman and child on board this ship is in a lifeboat, I will not enter into a lifeboat myself,'” Kurzman told the Today Show.

In a remarkable show of support, Ida Straus chose to stay behind with her husband Isidor rather than leave.

Ellen Bird, a maid of the wealthy couple Isidor and Ida Straus, reportedly witnessed the couple’s last moments, according to Kurzman.

“Isidor wrapped his arms around her,” Kurzman told Country Living Magazine. “Then, a great wave came over the port side of the ship and swept them both into the sea. That was the last time they were seen alive.”
