Passengers and crew onboard the vessel include British-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, his son Suleman Dawood, British billionaire Hamish Harding, former French Navy diver Paul-Henry Nargeolet and the Chief Executive officer of OceanGate Expeditions, Stockton Rush.

The international search and rescue operation did “doing everything possible” as part of a “complex search effort” but has so far “not yielded any results,” US Coast Guard Capt. Jamie Frederick told reporters Tuesday.

Who is Shahzada Dawood? Shahzada Dawood was a Paskistani-British lawyer, businessman and marketing guru who rose to prominence following his disappearance and death aboard the Titanic submersible.

Dawood was born in Pakistan but moved to the UK at an early age. The Dawood family is one of the wealthiest families in all of Pakistan.

According to his LinkedIn page, Shahzada Dawood studied law at the University of Buckingham once in the UK, earning a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 1998.

He then proceeded to Philadelphia University in the United States, where he completed an MsC in Textile Marketing in the year 2000.

Sadly, the worst possible news was announced following the search by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Rear Admiral John Mauger, the commander of the U.S. Coast Guard leading the search, announced on Thursday at a news conference in Boston that an ROV — or a remote operated vehicle — found “five major pieces of debris” that is consistent with the “catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber.” He added that the vessel was found 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic. The nose cone was among the five major pieces of debris found.

Mauger said that, upon this determination, the Coast Guard immediately notified the families, and he offered his “deepest condolences.”

“I can only imagine what this has been like for them,” he added. “And I hope that this discovery provides some solace during this difficult time.”

OceanGate Expeditions said in a statement that “we now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, have sadly been lost.”

“This is an extremely sad time for our dedicated employees who are exhausted and grieving deeply over this loss. The entire OceanGate family is deeply grateful for the countless men and women from multiple organizations of the international community who expedited wide-ranging resources and have worked so very hard on this mission,” the statement continued.

“We appreciate their commitment to finding these five explorers, and their days and nights of tireless work in support of our crew and their families. This is a very sad time for the entire explorer community, and for each of the family members of those lost at sea. We respectfully ask that the privacy of these families be respected during this most painful time.”

Shahzada Dawood, his son Suleman Dawood and the three other people on board the missing submersible close to the wreck of the Titanic have “about 40 hours of breathable air” left, the US Coast Guard has said. 

In a 6pm update on Tuesday, Captain Jamie Frederick said the search for the vessel, called Titan, had not yielded any results so far.

An ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle) has been deployed at the site and has a camera on board. Several research vessels with “ROV capabilities are making preparations to join the efforts”, Mr Frederick said.

A unified command has been set up, consisting of “expertise from the United States Coast Guard, the United States Navy, Canadian Armed Forces and Coast Guard, and the Titan’s parent company, Ocean Gate Expeditions”, Mr Frederick said.

US President Joe Biden is “watching events closely” surrounding the missing submersible near the wreckage of the Titanic, the White House said Tuesday.

As is well known by now, all five passengers aboard the 21-foot submersible Titan — owned by OceanGate Expeditions — were presumed dead following a “catastrophic implosion.”
