Seamus Dempsey shot and killed his son Liam and then himself, at 71 Frawley Street Warwick RI, in a tragedy that stunned the nation.

A child and an adult were killed in an apparent murder-suicide in Warwick, Rhode Island Thursday morning.

Police responded to a home on Frawley Street just before 8:30 a.m. for a domestic disturbance.

They had been informed that a suspect was in the home with a gun and a child had been shot.

When officers breached the home, they found the deceased body of the child as well as that of an adult male who was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Warwick police on Thursday named the victims as 33-year-old Seamus Dempsey, who killed his son, 4-year-old Liam Dempsey, and then himself.

The occupants of 71 Frawley Street in Warwick, Rhode Island where the shooting occurred have been identified as Seamus, Sean and Ellen Dempsey.

Seamus Dempsey has been identified as the perpetrator of the murder-suicide who shot his 4-year-old son, Liam Dempsey, and then himself.

Warwick Police Department says it got a call on Thursday around 8:24 a.m. about a possible homicide at 71 Frawley Street.

The caller, identified as 33-year-old Estefania Dempsey, told police her husband Seamus had shot their biological son with a handgun.

Plus, Estefenia said her 79-year-old mother-in-law, Ellen Dempsey, was still in the home with the alleged assailant.

When officers entered the home, they found the body of Liam and Seamus, both suffering from a gunshot wound.

According to an obituary of his published by Quinn Funeral Home, “Seamus attended St. Kevin’s School as a child and was a graduate of Warwick Veterans High School.

“He went on to join the United States Marine Corps. He continued his career as a Teamster with Local 251 and worked as a Truck Driver with P.J Keating Co.

“An all-around athlete, Seamus enjoyed playing and cheering on his favorite sports teams. He was known to be a great son, brother and friend to those that knew him.

“In addition to his mother Ellen, he is survived by his wife Estefania Dempsey; son, Gabriel Dempsey; and brother Sean Dempsey. He was the father of the late Liam Dempsey,”

Meanwhile, according to a Gofundme fundraiser in his name, “Liam was a student at the Warwick Early Learning Center, where his intelligence and enthusiasm for learning shone brightly. He had a contagious energy that brought joy to everyone around him.

“Liam was a playful soul who adored running around and engaging in adventures with his older brother. His love for dinosaurs and cars knew no bounds, and he found immense joy in watching “Toy Story” and streaming videos on YouTube.

“He had a special fondness for little things that brought him happiness, whether it was a dinosaur-shaped chicken nugget, his morning bagel with cream cheese, or strawberry frosted donuts from Dunkin.”

The incident

Warwick Police Chief Colonel Bradford Connor said officers were called to the home on Frawley Street just before 8:30 a.m. Thursday for a domestic disturbance after receiving reports that a child had been shot, and the suspect was armed inside the home.

Officers gained entry to the home to find the deceased body of the young child and an adult male who was killed from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Warwick’s chief of police confirmed that detectives are looking into the incident as a murder-suicide.

A Warwick police statement read: “”On Thursday, March 21, 2024, at approximately 8:24 AM, members of the Warwick Police Department responded to 71 Frawley St for a domestic disturbance.

“Prior to arrival they received information that a child had been shot and the alleged assailant was still inside the home with a firearm.

“Officers gained entry into the home and discovered the deceased body of a small child as well as an adult male who was also deceased; having suffered from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“While detectives continue to piece together the events leading up to this horrific crime, the members of the Warwick Police Department send our deepest condolences to the family members and those affected by this senseless and unimaginable act. As a community we are saddened by the events that occurred today.

“No further information will be provided at this time,”

A woman ABC6 spoke with says she heard officers telling the suspect to come out with his hands up.

“I could hear ‘71 Frawley please come out with your hands up,’ it went on for about half an hour, over and over they were repeating it,” said the witness.

“The members of the Warwick Police Department send our deepest condolences to the family members and those affected by this senseless and unimaginable act,” Warwick Police Chief Bradford Connor wrote in a statement.

Currently, authorities are being mum on those involved in the shooting, but online records have revealed who occupies and owns 71 Frawley Street in Warwick.

He previously lived in Warwick, RI and Cranston, RI and was the brother of Seamus Dempsey.

Meanwhile, Warwick Mayor Frank Picozzi released a statement on the tragedy, thanking first responders and Father Bob Marciano, a pastor at Saint Kevin Roman Catholic Parish in a post Thursday.

“Our city suffered a devastating tragedy of the worst kind this morning. We are blessed to have such outstanding police and fire departments to watch over us. I think that sometimes we take them for granted and although they are heroes they are also humans and are affected by these situations,” Mayor Picozzi said.

“I was there today and I could see it in their eyes and body language. I’m certainly struggling with it myself. If you see an officer or firefighter in your travels, throw them a wave or give them a thank you.

“And I want to thank Father Marciano our chaplain. He is always there to bring comfort to not only victims but to our first responders.

“I’ve already started receiving inquiries from people about how to help the family. If there is a call for help I will pass it on. Warwick is such a wonderful community that really looks out for each other.

“Say a prayer, hug your loved ones. We’ll mourn, and heal as a community,”

They are investigating a Domestic related shooting; 4 victims are deceased. The Offender is in custody and scene is secure. Due to ongoing investigation, we are asking residents to stay out of the area. More updates to follow,”

They later added in an update: “Tinley Park police have identified the four women who were shot and killed Sunday morning in a domestic incident at a home in the 7400 block of W. 173rd St.

“The victims are Majeda Kassem, 53, and her daughters Halema Kassem, 25; Hanan Kassem, 24; and Zahia Kassem, 25.
