The victims of the Tinley park shooting were identified as Majeda Kassem, 59; twins, Halema Kassem, 25; and Zahia Kassem, 25; and Hanan Kassem, 24.

Each had suffered gunshot wounds when found by authorities.

Their father, Maher Kassem, believed to have perpetrated the act, has been arrested.

Family members said Maher was controlling and did not even restricted his wife’s movements – but more on that below.

Halema Kassem, 25, was one of the three daughters of Maher and Majeda Kassem who were shot and killed at their Tinley Park residence.

Police believe it was a domestic incident gone wrong.

They had another sister, Hanan, as well as two brothers.

Little is known about Halema Kassem but according to neighbors of the Kassem’s, she and her twin sister Zahia were high achieving and had massive dreams in life.

“My daughter knows them,” neighbor Charlotte Vaitkus told the media.

“She went to school with the oldest son, and she employed the twin sisters. She always talked about how they were all very intelligent, and they had very high goals in life.”

Halema, according to an online fundraiser to build a mosque in the slain ladies’ honor, was a pharmacy graduate working towards becoming a clinical pharmacist.

She was also a Palestinian advocate who also fought against domestic violence.

“Halema Kassem, one of the twins, was a soon to be pharmacy graduate with the intention of becoming a clinical pharmacist,” the fundraiser read.

“Halema let out her creativity through henna art. Her smile lit the room, and her hand carried the excitement to express her creativity through henna. She always put in extra effort to satisfy her family and friends.

“Halema was not only a Palestinian activist but an advocate for anyone that was in need of emotional support despite her being a victim domestic violence. Anyone that interacted with Halema knew how gentle and soft her heart was,” it concluded.

Police are expected to provide updates on the tragedy at a Monday press conference which is currently ongoing.

Authorities announced Tuesday Maher Kassem has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder for the murder of his wife and three daughters.

The tragedy

Police were called to the 7430 173rd place in Tinley Park around 11am Sunday, January 21st 2024 where they found 4 women dead – a mother and her three children identified as Majeda Kassem, 53, Halema Kassem, 25, Zahia Kassem, 25, and Hanan Kassem, 24.

Maher Kassem is believed to have shot and killed his wife and three children following a domestic dispute at their Tinley Park residence.

The Village of Tinley Park Public Safety reported the incident, writing on Facebook: “Police are in the area 7400 block of 173rd place. They are investigating a Domestic related shooting; 4 victims are deceased. The Offender is in custody and scene is secure. Due to ongoing investigation, we are asking residents to stay out of the area. More updates to follow,”

They later added in an update: “Tinley Park police have identified the four women who were shot and killed Sunday morning in a domestic incident at a home in the 7400 block of W. 173rd St.

“The victims are Majeda Kassem, 53, and her daughters Halema Kassem, 25; Hanan Kassem, 24; and Zahia Kassem, 25.

“Police arrived at the home shortly before 11:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call. Upon arriving, police found the women had been shot to death and took a man into custody in relation to the shooting. Police also recovered the gun used in the shooting. The scene is secure, and police are still investigating,”

Family members said Maher was controlling and did not even allow his wife to see certain people.

“She had all these kids for him. She wasn’t allowed to leave the house. I used to come and sneak her out. He told her not to talk to me,” she said, according to fox32.

Co-founder of the Arab American Family Services, Itedal Shalabi, said the victims in this case were Muslim, but this crime had nothing to do with religion. Shalabi says domestic violence is about control.

“The course of control is there in any culture, in any religion, it’s about the power of control,” Shalabi said.

Zahia Kassem, similar to Halema, was a daughter of Majeda Kassem Tinley park il and her husband, Maher Kassem – she was a twin to Halema.

Zahia Kassem Tinley park, like her sister, also recently graduated, but she had a degree in radiology as opposed to pharmacology for her sister.

She was described as outspoken and had a charismatic personality.

“Zahia Kassem also known as Zee and a twin that graduated as a radiology technician and planning to take her exam in less than a week,” an online fundraiser for the family provided more details on Zahia.

“She was an outspoken, lighthearted soul that would win a anyone’s heart with her charismatic personality. Zahia made it a goal for both herself and others to look and feel good about themselves. Zahia was an ambitious woman who always accomplished anything she put her mind to. One of them being her dream to go to umrah,” it said.

Meanwhile, a neighbor also gave her opinion on the twins to the media.

“My daughter knows them,” neighbor Charlotte Vaitkus told the media.

“She went to school with the oldest son, and she employed the twin sisters. She always talked about how they were all very intelligent, and they had very high goals in life.”

Hanan Kassem was the youngest daughter of Maher and Majeda Kassem and sister of Halema and Zahia who also died in the senseless Tinley Park shooting.

She was the youngest of the family aged just 24.

Hanan Kassem was getting her education in speech pathology. She was always a helping hand and had her special way of making people feel like they belong. she was always so thoughtful and considerate with her supportive words. Her heart held a special place for her family, and she will be deeply missed.

Kassem name origin

Many people are searching for the Kassem name origin to attempt to understand the background of the family involved in the Tinley park vision.

According to reports, the Kassem name origin is of Arabic descent.

The family are practising Muslims and Palestinian activists. Zahia, who also went by Zee, had recently visited Mecca.

Maher Kassem was born on June 1st 1960, making him 63 years old.

He was married to Majeda Kassem and they had five children, twins Halema and Zahia, Hanan and two boys who apparently were not around at the time of the shooting in Tinley park.

Maher Kassem is believed to have shot and killed his wife and three children following a domestic dispute at their Tinley Park residence.

Village Manager Pat Carr said a male made a 911 call saying someone was shot in the residence, and when police arrived they found the four gunshot victims dead on the scene.

Carr confirmed the shooting was the result of a domestic incident. A male suspect was arrested – possibly Maher Kassem Tinley park – and a weapon was recovered.

We know that this was isolated to this home,” Carr said.

“The [person was] taken into custody at the home. The scene is secure. There is only one suspect at this time, and we are confident that there is no threat to the general public in the area.”

Per media reports, four women were found fatally wounded in what officials described as a “domestic-related shooting” inside a home on 173rd Street in Tinley Park just before 11:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Tinley Park Public Safety and ABC 7 Chicago.

When officers arrived, they found the bodies of the four women identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner as Majeda Kassem Tinley park il, 59; Halema Kassem, 25; Zahia Kassem, 25; and Hanan Kassem, 24.

They took a man, who is believed to be the husband and father of the victims, into custody at the scene, where they also recovered a firearm, according to the local reports.

According to reports, Xuanyi Yu worked as a software engineer at Google, based in Santa Clara in the famed tech hub that is Silicon Valley.

She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering from the institution in 2018, according to Xuanyi Yu Google LinkedIn.

During her time at the University, she met Liren Chen, another software engineer in the making and they struck up a romance.

The duo would later relocate to the United States of America, where they would both attend UC San Diego for their Master’s degrees.

Xuanyi Yu and Liren Chen would then both land positions as software engineers at Google and get married.

Anyway, back to Xuanyi, she attended UC San Diego from 2018 to 2020 for her Master’s Degree in Computer Science.

Following her education, Xianyi Yu started her career proper and has held positions such as being a software Development Engineer Intern at Amazon between
Jun 2019 – Sep 2019.

Xuanyi Yu Google died on January 16th 2024, when after an altercation with her husband, he attacked her and assaulted her till she died.

Authorities found him with blood all over him and arrested him. He is expected to be charged with murder.

“Domestic violence deaths have been falling in our county but that does not measure the depth and destructiveness of the violence,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said following Chen’s arrest.

“Anyone who feels that they or someone else is being abused by their partners, please reach out your local law enforcement agency. You are not alone. We can help.”
