His former boss Rick Journey said he was “a class act, a true gentleman, and a great journalist.”

His former competitor Dave Baird said he was “a great guy, a great broadcaster, and a great competitor.”

Radio Television Digital News Association President Dan Shelley issued the following statement regarding Richards’ passing: “Scott Richards was a shining example of the very best of community service as embodied by a local journalist.

“He spent his career serving the people of Alabama by shining a light on news stories that made a positive impact on the communities he served.

“The Radio Television Digital News Association joins his CBS 42 colleagues, his viewers throughout the decades and his family in mourning the loss of this local broadcast news giant. He will be missed terribly,”

“Scott got into broadcasting during his three-year enlistment in the United States Army.

“After basic training at Ft. Dix and journalism training at the Defense Information School at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, the Army sent Scott to the Panama Canal Zone where he worked in radio and then became the evening news anchor for SCN, the Southern Command Network.

“Following Scott’s last military assignment at Ft. Knox, He began his career in commercial broadcasting at WLKY-TV in Louisville, Kentucky as a general assignment reporter / photographer and then as the 11 p.m. news producer.

“His career next took him to WKRC-TV, Cincinnati where he worked as a reporter and weekend anchor and occasionally substituted for Nick Clooney (George’s father) on the weekday anchor desk. Scott’s next move up the ladder was back to Louisville as weekday evening news co-anchor and executive producer.

“In 1981 Scott came to Birmingham as the evening news anchor for WBRC-TV and remained in that position until he retired in 2014.

“He was named Best News Anchor in Alabama nine times by the Alabama Associated Press Broadcasters Association and was inducted into the Silver Circle of the Southeastern Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences,”
