Rafael Govea Romero was arrested Saturday by Texas Rangers for murdering Edna, Texas, 16-year-old cheerleader Lizbeth Medina.

The Edna Police Department said in a press release issued Sunday that they were able to arrest Rafael Govea Romero Edna Texas, 23, on a capital murder charge in the death of Lizbeth Medina. 

Cops were called around 7 p.m. Tuesday to Cottonwood Apartments for an “unresponsive juvenile.” 

Paramedics pronounced Lizbeth dead. 

Lizbeth’s mother reportedly found her dead in the bathtub and there was no forced entry into the home. 

Lizbeth’s mother Jacqueline Medina told local CBS affiliate KHOU her daughter was “murdered in cold blood” by Rafael Govea Romero only a year after they moved to Edna Texas from Nebraska.

“It should have been a great day because she was involved in the Christmas parade. She was going to be with the cheer squad,” the devastated mother said, calling Lizbeth “my world, my everything.”

On Friday, Edna police released photos of a man who they described as a “person of interest” along with an “associated vehicle.” 

Cops described the man as possibly having a tattoo located behind his right ear and wearing a black “Volcom” hoodie.

He also was driving a silver Ford Taurus. 

Detectives with Edna police and Texas Rangers were able to identify Rafael Govea Romero, who is undocumented, as the suspect and arrested him about 60 miles away in Schulenburg. 

Romero was taken to the Jackson County Jail.

“Although Romero is apprehended, we recognize Lizbeth’s family and friends are grieving and will still need support from the community,” Edna Police Chief Rick Boone said in a news release.

“She was born and raised in Grand Island NE and had only been living in Edna Tx for a year. 

“She was the only child to her mother Jaqueline Medina, she also leaves behind two loving grandparents Refugio Medina and Yesenia Medina (Yeyo and Yeya) who she loved and considered them as parents, she also leaves behind Aunts Ana Medina and Ramona Medina an uncle Sergio Medina and adoring cousins along side so many more family and friends that have been torn apart from this tragedy. 

“As a family we are asking the community for help to not only get Justice for my sweet Lizbeth but for any support that you can offer to my family at this time anything is appreciated.

“We would also like to thank everyone in the Edna community that has been supporting us in this difficult time,”

Lizbeth Medina was an Edna, Texas cheerleader who was found slain in a bathtub with her killer identified as Rafael Govea Romero.

The Edna Police Department said a juvenile was found unresponsive Tuesday and believed to be a victim of capital murder, according to a press release. The girl was later identified as Lizbeth Medina, 16.

Jacqueline, her mother, told Fox News she found her daughter in the bathtub.

Jacqueline described the horrific moment she discovered her daughter’s body at the Cottonwood Apartments home they shared.

She had woken her daughter as she left for work at 6am on Tuesday because Lizbeth needed to join her Edna High School teammates for cheer practice ahead of the parade that afternoon.

But when Jacqueline went to the parade after work her daughter was not there and she discovered that no-one had heard from her since 7.30am.

“I decided to go look for her, and I kept calling her phone nonstop, and it would take me straight to voicemaiI,” she told Fox News.

“I called a bunch of people and nobody knew anything. It wasn’t until I walked into the restroom that I was on the phone with my friend asking him to come help me look for her – is when I [saw] her foot, and it was in the bathtub.

“And so I opened the curtains. There she was,”

Lizbeth, who also went by Liz, was a junior at Edna High School and planned to attend Arlington University to study nursing.
