Jonathan Diller, 31 of Massapequa, New York has been identified as the NYPD officer shot and killed in Far Rockaway Monday.
Multiple reports Monday said an on-duty NYPD officer had been shot whilst conducting a vehicle stop in Queens.
Two officers were conducting a traffic stop at 1919 Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway around 5:48 p.m. as part of the NYPD Critical Response Team, which has been focusing on cars with fake plates, illegal tints or other quality-of-life issues.
The officers stopped a vehicle which had two men inside because it was parked at a bus stop illegally.
However, when they asked the individuals in the car to step out of the vehicle, one suspect, in the passenger’s seat, refused.
He pulled out a gun instead and fired, striking one of the officers below his bulletproof vest.
The officer’s partner then fired at the suspect, striking him in the back.
The wounded officer, identified by Mayor Eric Adams as “Jonathan,” was rushed to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition, and later died.
Who was Jonathan Diller Massapequa Park?
Jonathan Diller was a 31-year-old NYPD officer struck and killed during a traffic stop in Far Rockaway on Monday.

He was hit and rushed to hospital, where he died.
Jonathan Diller was a resident of Massapequa Park in New York.
He had recently welcomed a child with his wife Stephanie Diller, just over a year ago, according to an online baby registry.
According to a neighbor and fellow officer in Massapequa Park, Jonathan Diller had been on the job for just three years.
“We lost a hero tonight. An NYPD Police Officer, Jonathan Diller, a 31 year old with just 3 years on the job. He lives in my neighborhood and worked where I worked as a Detective Sergeant, as well as the same precinct (the 105 in Jamaica) where another Police Officer, Brian Moore (also from Massapequa) was killed in 2015,” Michael Blangiforti wrote.
He also lamented the system that allowed the killer with tons of multiple priors to have access to guns to still kill officers with.
“How is a scumbag with 21 prior arrests, recently arrested on a gun charge less than a year ago not in prison? I mean, we all KNOW why, right? Revolving door justice, inexplicable bail reform laws and a broken criminal justice system is a significant part of it.
“May Police Officer Diller rest in eternal peace. Fidelis ad mortem.
“May God bless his family, my beloved NYPD and all those who wear the uniform protecting our cities and our country every day,” he added.
Massapequa Park is an incorporated village located within the southern portion of the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on the South Shore of Long Island, in New York.
The population was 17,008 at the 2010 census.
Jonathan Diller passed away on Monday, March 25th 2024.
According to the New York Daily News, Officer Jonathan Diller, 31, and his partner pulled Lindy Jones, 41, and Guy Rivera, 34, over near the corner of Mott Ave. and Smith Place in Far Rockaway just before 5:50 p.m.
During an exchange of gunfire, Diller was shot in the stomach and a suspect was shot once in the back.
“It happened so fast,” Melissa Morgan, 39, told the Daily News. “The police officer fell on the floor and the other officers dragged the two guys out of the car. I was running for cover.
“He shot a cop,” added Morgan. “It’s unbelievable.”

A local barber who watched the shooting unfold saw the officer fall to the ground.
“He was rolling around on the ground saying, ‘I’m shot, I’m shot,’” said the man, who did not want to be named.
A police radio transmission showed the frantic moments after Jonathan Diller was shot with officers heard calling for an ambulance.
“We need a bus here ASAP!” an officer screams into the radio. “We have an officer shot!”
The NYPD shut down the Van Wyck Expressway to rush the wounded officer to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he died.
“We lost one of our sons today and it is extremely painful,” Adams said at a press conference at the hospital. “It’s extremely painful.”
Diller’s partner, Rivera, is expected to survive.
Tributes were awash on social media following confirmation of the death of Jonathan Diller of Massapequa Park.
NYPD Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban wrote: “Tonight this city lost a hero, a wife lost her husband, and a young child lost their father.
“We struggle to find the words to express the tragedy of losing one of our own. The work that Police Officer Jonathan Diller did each day to make this city a safer place will NEVER be forgotten.
“Our prayers are with his family, loved ones, and brothers and sisters in blue,”
The Fire Department of New York wrote: “The FDNY mourns the loss of NYPD Police Officer Jonathan E. Diller, Queens South CRT, killed in the line of duty Monday while protecting our city,”
Former New York Police Commissioner Bill Bratton wrote: “The line-of-duty murder of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller is a tragedy for the NYPD and every New Yorker he so bravely protected.
“He was a guardian of our city and now a guardian at the gates of heaven. His legacy will forever be one of courageous, selfless service and the ultimate sacrifice. We will #NeverForget,”
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo also weighed in; “My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller who was shot and killed tonight in the line of duty. R.I.P.”
“We are praying for the officer injured as we await to learn more,” local Councilwoman Selvena Brooks-Powers said in a statement.
“Streets throughout downtown Far Rockaway have been sectioned off as NYPD investigates the shooting. The public is asked to avoid the area if possible.”
“There will be plenty of time for anger, grief and for processing pain, but right now, our prayers are with our fallen officer’s family, his fellow cops and every member of the New York City Police Department, but most of all, they’re with the officer himself,” NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said.
Recidivism Problem
One of the two suspects who shot and killed Jonathan Diller of Massapequa Park, according to Mayor Adams, was arrested in April of 2023 on a gun charge yet was back out in the street.
Adams called this incident a “recidivist” problem.
“Same bad people, doing bad things to good people, less than a year, he’s back on the streets with another gun,” he said.
The suspect’s gun was recovered at the scene.

As we previously reported, an officer-involved shooting such as the one that took the life of Jonathan Diller of Massapequa Park occurred in Independence, Missouri.
Cody Allen, 35, was an officer with the Independence, Mo Police department killed during a shootout in January.
Cody Allen, an Independence police officer and a Jackson County court employee were both shot and killed in the shooting.The shooting took place during an eviction.
A Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesperson stated that multiple civil process servers arrived at a home in the 1100 block of North Elsea Smith Road.
While the eviction notice took place, someone at the home shot one of the process servers.
At that point, a neighbor and court employee at the scene called 911 for additional assistance.
At 1:09 p.m., officers from the Independence Police Department responded and rendered aid to the court employee. While doing so, the two police officers were shot.
One of those police officers, Ofc. Cody Allen, died in the shooting. Drexel Mac, the civil process server, also died from his wounds.
Two other responding officers suffered a gunshot wound but are expected to make a full recovery.
Far Rockaway
Far Rockaway is a neighborhood on the eastern part of the Rockaway peninsula in the New York City borough of Queens.
It is the easternmost section of the Rockaways. The neighborhood extends from Beach 32nd Street east to the Nassau County line.

In 1664, the English defeated the Dutch colony and took over their lands in present-day New York.
In 1685, the band chief, Tackapoucha, and the English governor of the province agreed to sell the Rockaways to a Captain Palmer for 31 pounds sterling.
Based on data from the 2010 United States Census, the population of Far Rockaway was 50,058, a change of 1,714 (3.4%) from the 48,344 counted in 2000.
The racial makeup of the neighborhood was 25.5% (12,778) White, 44.7% (22,400) African American, 0.3% (175) Native American, 1.9% (931) Asian, 0.1% (44) Pacific Islander, 1% (504) from other races, and 1.7% (860) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 24.7% (12,366) of the population.
