Who was Joel Cauchi? Queensland Man Identified as Westfield Bondi Stabbing Suspect

Joel Cauchi, 40, has been identified as the Australian man who went on a stabbing spree at the Westfield Bondi shopping center in Sydney.

Cauchi killed six people and wounded eight more, including a 9-month-old infant whose mother died in the attack.

In an update on the attack, New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said the suspect originally hailed from Queensland and was known to police.

He said Cauchi had bought a storage unit in Sydney after moving to New South Wales from Brisbane, Queensland a month ago.

“We know that the offender in the matter suffered from mental health, we are continuing to work through the profiling of the offender” he said.

Posts on social media revealed Cauchi went to Harristown High School in Toowoomba.

He had his University education at Southern Qld and had worked as an English tutor.

The devastating attack killed five women and a man.

One of the deceased was a new mom, Ashlee Good, who saved her baby from the attack by shielding her with her body and handing her off to a bystander.

Good died from her wounds but her baby was taken into surgery.

The baby “had surgery overnight and is currently in a critical condition and is in ICU,” Health Minister Ryan Park told ABC news.

Cauchi, meanwhile, was killed by a lone female officer.

Amy Scott was nearby and rushed to the scene to take down the suspect by shooting him down.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised the actions of a lone senior policewoman who confronted Mr Cauchi and shot him dead as horror gripped the mall.

“The wonderful inspector who ran into danger by herself and removed the threat that was there to others, without thinking about the risks to herself,” the prime minister said, thanking her and emergency teams.
