Guy Rivera and Lindy Jones are two men who were stopped by NYPD officer Jonathan Diller and his partner, leading to a shooting and the officer’s death.

Guy Rivera and Lindy Jones were stopped on Mott Avenue at around 5:45 p.m. Monday by Officer Diller and his partner, who has yet to be named.

Rivera and Jones were ordered to evacuate the vehicle however, Rivera drew a weapon instead and fired on Officer Diller.

His bullet struck the officer who was rushed to Jamaica Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Rivera was also hit by Diller’s partner and was sent to the same hospital where he’s said to be in stable condition.

Guy Rivera and Lindy Jones are two suspects who were involved in a shooting Monday that killed NYPD officer Jonathan Diller.

34-year-old Guy Rivera was the primary suspect having fired the shot that took the life of the officer.

Lindy Jones, 41, was the driver of the vehicle.

Both men reportedly have lengthy arrest records.

Rivera has at least 21 prior arrests by the NYPD, according to police sources. Nine of those arrests were for felonies.

He was released from prison in September 2021 after serving nearly five years for criminal sale of a controlled substance.

Rivera previously spent three years in state prison for a 2011 assault and was released in October 2014.

Lindy Jones, not to be left behind, also has 14 prior arrests.

He was arrested for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for having a loaded firearm in Far Rockaway on April 17, 2023.

Jones was out on $75,000 bail. He previously served 10 years in prison on 2003 attempted murder and robbery charges and was released in November 2013.

According to authorities, Diller and another officer were conducting a traffic stop on Mott Avenue at around 5:45 p.m. Monday when the shooting occurred.

Both officers are part of the NYPD Critical Response Team that has been focusing on cars with fake plates, illegal tints or other quality-of-life issues.

NYPD officials say the officers stopped the vehicle, which had two men inside, because it was parked at a bus stop illegally. Jones was driving and Rivera was in the passenger seat.

When officers asked the individuals to step out of the vehicle, Rivera refused, and pointed a gun at the officers.

Guy Rivera, 34, is accused of shooting Diller, who was struck in the torso, just below his bullet-resistant vest.

Officials say Diller’s partner then fired at Rivera, striking him in the back.

Diller was rushed to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition and later died.

The second officer was taken to the hospital with tinnitus.

Rivera was also rushed to Jamaica Hospital where he is listed in stbale condition. Jones is being held at a police precinct.

No official charges has been announced yet for either man.

Diller is the first NYPD officer killed in the line of duty since 2022 when officers Wilbert Mora and Jason Rivera were fatally shot in a Harlem apartment building after responding to a domestic disturbance call.

Jonathan Diller

Jonathan Diller was a 31-year-old NYPD police offier, badge no. #26357 from Massapequa Park, NY who was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Monday, March 25th, 2024.

According to records, Diller joined the service in February 2021.

He had served as an officer with the Patrol Borough Queens South Community Response Team.

At the time of his death, he was serving at the 105th Precinct, having been assigned there in February 2024.

Diller and his partner were part of the he NYPD Critical Response Team which has been focusing on cars with fake plates, illegal tints or other quality-of-life issues.

Jonathan Diller was a resident of Massapequa Park in New York.

He was married to his wife Stephanie Diller and they welcomed a child at the start of 2023.

According to the NYPD, Diller and his partner, who were members of the department’s Critical Response Team, conducted a traffic stop at 1919 Mott Ave., near Beach 20th Street, at around 5:48 p.m.

As they approached the vehicle, one of the suspects displayed a gun and pointed it at the officers.

Guy Rivera hit Diller, killing him. Diller’s partner hit Rivera, wounding him and sending him to the hospital.

Rivera was with Lindy Jones who was driving the vehicle.

At a press conference late Monday, New York Mayor Eric Adams addressed the media.

Mayor Eric Adams said: “We lost Jonathan tonight. And Stephanie, his wife, I was speaking with her, was extremely impactful. Brought me back at the beginning of my term as mayor speaking with the family members of Officers Rivera and Mora, and just feeling that intense pain, hoping that it was not true.

“It was because of a senseless act of violence that we witnessed, the person had a total disregard for the safety of this city. I cannot say it any clearer: it is the good guys against the bad guys. And these bad guys are violent. They carry guns. And the symbol of our public safety, which is that police uniform, they have a total disregard for.

“And this incident took place in the neighborhood,… just watching people walk down the block as these dangerous individuals inflicted a level of violence that took the life of a police officer, of a husband, of a son.

“My heart goes out to Jonathan’s family, Stephanie, and all that are in the room giving them the support.

“This is a devastating moment, one of the most difficult processes I have as the mayor of the City of New York. It’s my obligation to keep the men and women who wear that uniform safe,”

Police Commissioner Edward Caban said: “This evening, on a Queens street, a uniformed New York City police officer was shot during the job we asked him to do. He put himself in harm’s way.

“He went towards the danger all to keep the people we serve safe and to protect his fellow New Yorkers. Make no mistake, we should not be here right now. We should never be here praying for the life of a NYPD officer, but we are, and this is why.

“This is a difficult moment. There will be plenty of time for anger, grief and for processing pain. But right now, our prayers are with our fallen officer’s family, his fellow cops and every member of the New York City Police Department.

“But most of all, they’re with the officer himself. God bless him. God bless his family, and God bless every member of the NYPD. Thank you,”
