Sean Black, 42, has been charged with homicide, and attempted homicide, among others, after shooting and killing Courtney Smith, the mother of his children and her new romantic partner.

A Blawnox shooting Tuesday morning left a woman dead and one man in critical condition.

Police accuse Black of walking into Tri-Arc Manufacturing on Fountain Street and shooting two people.

Courtney Smith, 30, his former partner, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another man, Daniel Zoelle, Smith’s current partner, was taken to the hospital.

Sean Black and Courtney Smith, who both worked at Tri-Arc Manufacturing Co. on Blawnox’s Fountain Street, were raising three children together and had been in a romantic relationship “for several years,” police said.

Black and Smith had three boys, aged nine, five, and two years old.

“She wanted to give her kids the best life that she could. That’s exactly what she was doing until she was taken away,” Smith’s best friend, Taylor Lamson told Channel 11.

The couple separated recently and Smith had started dating a younger Tri-Arc co-worker, Daniel Zoelle, 26.

Black apparently could not take the fact his ex moved on and confronted her at work Tuesday.

Shortly before 6:30 a.m., Black and Smith got into what police called a “domestic dispute” at their shared workplace.

The dispute turned physical and the pair started to wrestle outside Smith’s supervisor’s office.

Then, police said, Black reached for a handgun.

“Sean — No! No!” Smith yelled, according to a criminal complaint.

It was too late.

Black shot Smith four to five times in the chest, then fired two or three more shots at Zoelle, police said.

First responders arriving at the scene found Black kneeling on top of Smith, with two guns nearby, the complaint said.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:42 a.m., according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Zoelle, who was shot multiple times in the torso and limbs, was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in critical condition, police said. Doctors at the North Side Hospital rushed him into surgery.

Sean Black has been charged with homicide, attempted homicide, aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and two counts of carrying a firearm without a license, court records show. He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

“It’s just a peaceful neighborhood. I always call it the center of little houses,” said Blawnox resident, Jim Ellrod in reaction to the tragedy.

“It’s highly unusual, really any place in Pittsburgh.”

“This is definitely not common for our area,” Blawnox Police Chief Patrick Goodman said. “

[Blawnox officers] handled themselves well. We’ll go forward and make sure everybody’s OK and not affected by this adversely.”

County police have stressed that the scene is secure and that there is no threat to the public.

“County Police are responding to a shooting in Blawnox. The scene is secure and there is no active threat to the public. More information to follow,” they wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Jeff Eller, a spokesperson for Tri-Arc, confirmed the shooting at the facility and said the company was working with law enforcement.

“There has been a shooting incident at our Tri-Arc facility in Blawnox, PA. We are working with law enforcement. The plant will be closed until further notice. We’ll have further details when it is appropriate.” Eller said.

More details about this tragedy are expected to come out in the coming hours and days.

Luis Napoles fatally shot his girlfriend, Meghan Moore, outside their apartment.

He then entered the building and killed Sidney Capolino, who was Moore’s roommate.

Finally, Napoles took his own life.

Blawnox is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,454 at the 2020 census.

It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.

The name, Blawnox, is derived from the Blaw-Knox Company, which had a manufacturing plant there providing much of the town’s employment. Blawnox had been called Hoboken.

The town was founded in the late 19th century, with the name Hoboken. Steel was the community’s major industry, with the area being home to the Blaw Steel Co. and the Knox Welded and Pressed Steel Co.

When the Blaw Steel Co. acquired the Knox Welded and Pressed Steel Co. in 1917, the company became known as the Blaw-Knox Steel Construction Co., and the size of Hoboken was expanded to the whole area spanned by the Blaw-Knox mill.

Blawnox is entirely surrounded by land to the north, northeast and west by the westernmost section of O’Hara Township.

Across the Allegheny River, Blawnox runs adjacent with Penn Hills.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,550 people, 858 households, and 373 families residing in the borough.

The population density was 4,771.6 people per square mile (1,842.3 people/km2). There were 931 housing units at an average density of 2,866.0 per square mile (1,106.6/km2).

The racial makeup of the borough was 93.03% White, 1.03% African American, 0.06% Native American, 5.23% Asian, 0.19% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.65% of the population.
