Who is Avery Lewis? Man Arrested for Shooting Boston Cop in Dorchester

Avery Lewis, 31 years old, has been identified as the man wanted for shooting a Boston Police officer Monday night in Dorchester.

Lewis is expected to appear Tuesday afternoon in Dorchester District Court.

He faces 10 charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a large capacity feeding device, armed assault to murder, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.

Boston police received a call shortly after 9:30 p.m. Monday reporting a man with a gun in the area of Esmond Street.

When officers arrived on scene and approached the gunman, they said he fired at least one shot, hitting one of the officers in the chest.

Other officers on scene were able to arrest the gunman without any other injuries.

The officer who was shot has yet to be identified but officials say he’s young and newer to the force.

“He’s not been on the job very long, less than two years, about two years, but he’s doing well and that’s the important thing,” Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said.

“He followed his training and another heroic officer, showing restraint and doing everything we can to protect the public and I’m just deeply proud and thankful that he’s not hurt, and no officers are hurt,”

“Tonight is yet another reminder of all that our officers and their families put on the line to serve our city,” Mayor Michelle Wu added.

At Avery Lewis’ arraignment Tuesday, over a dozen police officers appeared in court for the hearing.

According to court records, Lewis was previously arrested following a SWAT team response and drug raid in Webster in 2017.

After a weeks-long investigation, on March 24, 2017, at 5 a.m., members of the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council SWAT team and Webster Police officers and detectives executed a search warrant for narcotics at 15 Granite St., apartment 1 in that town, Webster Police said at the time.

When investigators entered the apartment, they found 30 grams of what was believed to be crack cocaine and $6,000 in cash. Two children, aged 7 and 7 months, were in the apartment at the time, police said.

The Department of Children and Families was notified.

It’s not immediately clear how the 2017 trafficking case was resolved.

Dorchester is a Bostonian neighborhood comprising more than 6 square miles (16 km2) in the City of Boston, Massachusetts, United States.

Originally, Dorchester was a separate town, founded by Puritans who emigrated in 1630 from Dorchester, Dorset, England, to the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

This dissolved municipality, Boston’s largest neighborhood by far, is often divided by city planners in order to create two planning areas roughly equivalent in size and population to other Boston neighborhoods.

The neighborhood is named after the town of Dorchester in the English county of Dorset, from which Puritans emigrated on the ship Mary and John, among others.

Founded in 1630, just a few months before the founding of the city of Boston, Dorchester now covers a geographic area approximately equivalent to nearby Cambridge.

It was still a primarily rural town and had a population of 12,000 when it was annexed to Boston in 1870.

Railroad and streetcar lines brought rapid growth, increasing the population to 150,000 by 1920.

In the 2010 United States Census, the neighborhood’s population was 92,115.

The Dorchester neighborhood has a very diverse population, which includes a large concentration of African Americans, European Americans (particularly those of Irish, German, Italian, and Polish origin), Caribbean Americans, Latinos, and East and Southeast Asian Americans.

Dorchester also has a significant LGBT population, with active political groups and the largest concentration of same-s*x couples in Boston after the neighborhoods of South End and Jamaica Plain.
