Three young men of Palestinian descent who were in Burlington, Vermont, for a Thanksgiving holiday gathering were shot and injured near the University of Vermont this weekend, police said Sunday.

Authorities were investigating the attack as a hate crime.

Two victims were treated on scene and taken to University of Vermont Medical Center, where they were in stable condition on Sunday.

The third victim was rushed to UVM Medical Center and suffered “much more serious injuries,” Murad said in a press release.

“My deepest condolences go out to the victims and their families,” he added.

Jason J Eaton, 48, the suspect in the shooting of 3 Palestinians, appeared in court Monday, charged with 3 counts of attempted murder.

At the procedural hearing, Eaton reportedly spoke only to confirm his name. He also pleaded not guilty.

He will be held without bail until another hearing takes place in the next few days.

Mr Eaton lived in an apartment building opposite the location of the shooting on Prospect Street, according to police.

He was reportedly arrested as federal agents were canvassing near the scene on Sunday.

According to the Daily Beast, Eaton had bounced around different jobs and previously was an “assistant to a financial officer.”

Public records tie the suspect to Middlebury Solari, an investment model.

2004 Portsmouth Herald article describes Eaton as the president of the method intended to promote local control of resources in Vermont.

Mr Eaton’s mother, Mary Reed, told The Daily Beast her son had struggled with mental health and job security but had been “in such a good mood” when they met for Thanksgiving on Thursday.

“It was the best Thanksgiving we had in years,” Eaton’s mother said. “We were all together.”

During the family dinner, Reed said that Eaton did not mention the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.

She added, however, that her son is a “very religious person” who connects with different religious figures and often reads the Bible.

“Jason has had a lot of struggles in his life. I am just shocked by the whole thing,” she continued.

“I just don’t understand,” Reed said.

“I can’t believe he would do something like this.”

According to a preliminary investigation, the city’s police chief says the three victims, all age 20, were visiting the home of one of the victim’s relatives and were walking when they were confronted by a white man – later identified as Jason Eaton – with a handgun.

“Without speaking, he discharged at least four rounds from the pistol and is believed to have fled,” Murad said in a news release.

“All three victims were struck, two in their torsos and one in the lower extremities.”

Murad said all three men are of Palestinian descent. Two are U.S. citizens and one is a legal resident.

Two of the men were wearing the black-and-white Palestinian keffiyeh scarves and they were speaking Arabic.

The three victims were later identified as Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdalhamid, and Tahseen Ahmed.

Considering the nature of the possible hate crime, searches are up to understand whether Jason Eaton is Jewish but it appears he is not.

Following the arrest, Burlington police released a statement.

“Throughout the day on Sunday, November 26, 2023, investigators led by Lieutenant Michael Beliveau of the Burlington Police Department’s Detectives Services Bureau conducted a series of canvasses, interviews, and other investigatory procedures in an effort to identify, locate, and apprehend the suspect believed to have shot three 20-year-old men the previous evening.

The BPD’s detectives were augmented by a contingent of personnel from long-term partners in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), with whom the BPD regularly works through the Chittenden County Gun Violence Task Force (CCGVTF).

The BPD also received outstanding assistance from agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), including victim services and computer and cellphone analysis,”

Three Palestinian students were injured after a shooting in Burlington, Vermont on Saturday evening.

Burlington Police responded to reports of shootings at around 6:30 p.m and found two men suffering from gunshot wounds when they arrived and found a third victim a short distance away.

Police arrested the shooter Sunday, identified as Jason J. Eaton of Burlington Vt.

Despite many people believing the attack was due to the Israel-Hamas war, Jason Eaton has not been shown to be Jewish.

The injured men were transferred to the University of Vermont Medical Center, where they are being treated for non-fatal injuries.

The three students were later identified as Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdel Hamid and Tahseen Ahmed – all Palestinian Americans and college students.

Hisham Awartani is a student at Brown University, Hamid studies at Haverford College and Ahmed attends Trinity College.

According to the Daily Mail, Abdel Hamid suffered minor injuries in the attack.

Awartani, however, was shot near the spine and has lost feeling in his legs, according to his great-uncle Marwan Awartani, a former education minister of the Palestinian Authority.

Ahmed, meanwhile, a student at Trinity College in Connecticut, was shot in the chest and his condition is ‘touch and go’ according to Abed A. Ayoub, the national executive director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

“They were doing what millions of other students were doing this weekend: getting away for the holiday and reconnecting with friends and family,” Ayoub added.

“Given the information collected and provided, it is clear that the hate was a motivating factor in this shooting.

“We call on law enforcement to investigate it as such. The surge in anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian sentiment we are experiencing is unprecedented, and this is another example of that hate turning violent.”
