Also known as the Baltimore block party mass shooting, the event left Aaliyah Gonzalez and 20-year old Kylis Fagbemi dead. As many as 28 other people ended up injured.

So who is Aaliyah Gonzales? Aaliyah Gonzalez was born on  April 12, 2005 in Passaic, New Jersey to Krystal and George Gonzalez. Aaliyah was the first child of George and Krystal Gonzalez, although she had an elder brother from her mother’s first marriage, Rashon Shelborne.

Aaliyah had four siblings, Rashon, a half-sister on her father’s side named Gabriella Gonzalez, a younger sister Mikylah and her younger brother, Jaidyn Gonzalez.

According to her family, Aaliyah Gonzales was a shining star and a happy person full of life. They described her as a person with a big heart who cared for everybody around her.

2023 had been a great year for Aaliyah Gonzalez. She graduated Glen Burnie High school and had just gotten her driver’s license. She was preparing to attend Annie Arundel Community College in the Fall.

She turned 18 on April 12th 2023. On that day, her mother shared a beautiful photo of Aaliyah Gonzales with a heartwarming caption, unaware of the lurking danger.

“18!! Many of you have watched my baby grow up here. I am so excited for her future. Keep shining babygirl. Happy birthday Aaliyah” Krystal Gonzalez had written.

Unfortunately, disaster struck! Aaliyah Gonzales was murdered in the mass shooting during a Baltimore block party on July 2nd 2023.

“We went from this super high to just a couple of weeks later like we shouldn’t be planning a funeral for my baby,” her mother Krystal Gonzalez said in tears. “We should not be doing this right now,”

Following news of the death of Aaliyah Gonzales, a hysterical Krystal jumped on social media to mourn.

“MY BABY!!! Worst day of my life! I cannot do life without her😭😭 I NEED HER!!” she wrote on Facebook.

“Why would they do this to a perfect angel. I love you so much baby. I didn’t get there fast enough. God this is a mistake!!! Please!!”

Aaliyah’s younger brother, Jaidyn Gonzalez could barely hold back tears during an interview with the press.

“She was the best sister I could ever ask for. I miss her so much,” he said of his deceased sister Aaliyah Gonzales, sobbing uncontrollably.

Brother Rashon Shelborne said: “For this tragic situation to come to the person…, the beautiful soul that she is, I just feel like that’s unfair and nobody that has a soul that Aaliyah has should ever have to go through anything like that,”

Police are still on the lookout for the killer(s), who are yet to be apprehended.

At least two shooters remain at large, Acting Baltimore Police Commissioner Rich Worley said at a press conference Sunday afternoon, noting that the motive for the shooting is being investigated by multiple law enforcement agencies.

“We don’t know if they were targeted,” he said of the victims, then noting the shooters: “Or if they were just shooting indiscriminately down the street.”

“We will not rest until we find those who cowardly decided to shoot up this block party and carry out acts of violence which we know will be illegal guns,” [Baltimore Mayor] Brandon Scott told Phil Mattingly and Audie Cornish on “CNN This Morning.”

“If it was your sister or your brother, you would want to know. Someone please come forward with some information so was have some closure and maybe save other lives,” Aaliyah’s Grandmother Kathy Shepperson said.

According to Aaliyah’s mother, she had a very small circle of friends and wasn’t even supposed to attend this block party. Her mother said she wasn’t even that close to the friend who invited her.

“First of all, Aaliyah kept a very small circle,” her mother said. “The young lady that she was with, God bless her but they never really hang out too often. I think it was the sense of them graduating now and then trying to find something to do during the summer before they go to school they decided to go to this block party,”

The father of Aaliyah, George Gonzalez chimed in: “They took the best person in the whole wide world away from us. That’s the only thing I could tell them,”

“We know for sure there is definitely more than one [suspect]. We don’t know exactly how many, but we do know more than one person was shooting,” said Worley.

As already noted there were two fatalities, Kylis Fagbemi and Aaliyah Gonzalez.

In an update Sunday afternoon, officials said 9 victims still remain in the hospital, with some in critical condition.

Worley said the police department received multiple calls about a shooting in the 800 block of Gretna Court about 12:30 a.m. When officers arrived, they found 10 victims who had been shot. One victim, an 18-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police learned 20 additional victims had walked into to local and regional hospitals from this shooting scene, said Worley.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said that the city is grieving for the lives that have been lost and the people who were injured. Scott called the shooting “reckless” and “cowardly.”

“I want those who are responsible to hear me and hear me very clearly. We will not stop until we find you, and we will find you. Until then, I hope with every single breath that you take that you think about the lives that you took and you think about the lives that you impacted here tonight.

“This is about people who cowardly decided to come to a celebration and shoot it up. Let’s call this what it is. Let’s not make this into some political dog whistle. The reality is that I can stand here today and tell you that homicides in Baltimore are down 20 percent – but who cares today – because 30 people were shot and 2 are dead.”

K-9 units had recovered multiple different shell casings after canvassing the area, police said. The commissioner asked members of the community to turn over videos, including those recorded on door security cameras, to aid in the investigation. Police are attempting to identify suspects through some videos already collected, including those posted on social media. No arrests have yet been made in connection to the shooting.
