Who is Nelson Mendez-Vasquez? - One Person Dead In Durham Shooting, Suspect Yeltsin Orozco Arrested

One person was killed and three others were injured after a shooting in Durham late Wednesday.

Yeltsin Cinto Orozco, 29, of Durham, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after the shooting that occurred near South LaSalle Street and the Durham Freeway.

One person, Nelson Mendez-Vasquez, 27, died in the shooting that left three other people injured.

Durham Police were called to Duke University Hospital about a walk-in patient with a gunshot wound.

When officers arrived, they said there were three men and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds.

Mendez-Vasquez soon died from his wound while of the remaining three, the woman is suffering from life-threatening injuries while the other men are in non-critical condition.

“Without going into detail. This particular time I received the frantic phone call directly…from someone saying, ‘Hey, there’s this – what do we do?’…’ There’s gonna be retaliation.”’ Durham Mayor Leo Williams said.

“I was just really upset and I appreciate… Chief Andrew’s being able to just…take that information and react.”

“And so that’s where my energy will go and that’s what I plan to focus on because this is happening on a daily basis right before us. And I just want to make sure that that’s always top of mind,” Williams said.
