Who was Samiya Spain? Park Slope Teen Stabbed Dead, Twin Sister Wounded After Refusing Male's Advances

Samiya Spain, a 19-year-old NYC teen was killed and her twin sister wounded after turning down the advances of a young male.

The twin 19-year-old sisters were each stabbed in a Brooklyn deli early Sunday, leaving one dead and the other receiving treatment in hospital.

The violence broke out on 4th Avenue at around 2:20 a.m. Sunday. A friend explained that the sisters were at a party and ended up at the deli in the early morning hours.

Police said in a short statement that Samiya Spain died from a stab wound to her chest.

Her sister, Sanyia, suffered a wound to her arm but was in a stable condition.

NYPD said the attack took place at about 2:20 a.m. inside a deli in the Park Slope neighborhood, on the corner of Saint Mark’s Place and 4th Avenue, a short walk from Spain’s home on Nevins Street.

According to witnesses, an argument began after a man complimented the women and said he found them attractive, but was rejected. He called them names, the witness said, then left the deli.

“He walked down the block angry. And then two or three minutes later he comes up and starts banging and kicking on the glass door trying to get in,” the witness said, adding that the deli staff had locked the door to prevent him re-entering.

“The second they opened the door, he ran back into the door and started attacking them,” the witness said.

Alphonso Goodson, the girls’ grandfather, told the New York Post: “He walked in and started hitting on her. She said, ‘I don’t want to be bothered with you. Leave me alone.’ Then the storeowner put him out.”

“He was waiting for them,” Goodson said. “He took it the wrong way. He came after them. That was wrong. That was dead wrong. I hope they catch this guy.”

Another witness said: “They’re not sober. They get rejected and they just escalate it ten-fold. We (were) all having a good night before this,”

“We just had left and we went to the store to get food. We all were getting sandwiches, beef patties just to eat, We’re hungry, we want to go home and this happens.”

“There are no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing at this time,” police said.

Park Slope is a neighborhood in western Brooklyn, New York City, within the area once known as South Brooklyn.

Park Slope is roughly bounded by Prospect Park and Prospect Park West to the east, Fourth Avenue to the west, Flatbush Avenue to the north, and Prospect Expressway to the south. Generally, the section from Flatbush Avenue to Garfield Place (the “named streets”) is considered the “North Slope”, the section from 1st to 9th Street is considered the “Center Slope”, and south from 9th Street, the “South Slope”.

The neighborhood takes its name from its location on the western slope of neighboring Prospect Park. Fifth Avenue and Seventh Avenue are its primary commercial streets, while its east–west side streets are lined with brownstones and apartment buildings.
