On Friday, legal journalist Meghann Cuniff reported that the 31-year-old rapper is seeking a motion with the Superior Court of Los Angeles to see his release on bail as he appeal his felony conviction and 10-year sentence handed down to him by a judge for shooting Megan Thee Stallion in her feet in 2020.

Court documents state if Lanez is released on bail, he’ll live in Los Angeles with Raina Chassagne, who’s listed as his wife, and their six-year-old son Kai. Lanez is expected to rent a home close to his family if he’s granted release.

“From his sentencing hearing engagement announcement to his bail motion wedding announcement, Tory Lanez’s relationship status has advanced rapidly in the last few weeks. His fiancée is now his wife, according to the motion,” tweeted Cuniff.

Sharing a snippet from his bail application, it contained clear evidence that Tory Lanez had a new wife – Raina Chassagne.

“Mr. Peterson continues to have strong ties to the community, as shown through testimony at his sentencing hearing within this honorable court on August 7th and 8th, 2023.

“If released, he would live locally in the Los 23 Angeles area, with his wife, Raina Chassagne, and their child, aged 6 years-old,” the application reads.

“Upon receiving bail, Mr. Peterson’s wife and child will be relocating from Florida to Los Angeles, where the child will be regularly attending school.

“They will rent a home near Mr. Peterson’s father, step-mother, siblings, and their children.

“Mr. Peterson currently and in the past has contracted to rent homes and at times vehicles from Aryan Nafari, owner of ASB exotics, LLC. Mr. Nafari reports that Mr. Peterson makes all of his payments timely…” the application continues.

A hearing was initially scheduled for Sept. 5 to discuss the bail motion that Tory Lanez’s team filed in court, although that has reportedly been postponed to September 14th.

A supportive wife

Throughout this trial, Reina Chassagne has stood by her man Tory Lanez, earlier as his baby mama and now, his wife.

Court documents show that Reina Chassagne was initially listed as the mother of Lanez’s child but that has now changed to his wife.

It’s not exactly clear when the two tied the knot, although Chassagne was present at Lanez’s sentence hearing earlier this month.

During that hearing, she pleaded with the court not to lock up her baby daddy.

During the first day of the sentencing hearing, Chassagne gave an emotional plea to lessen his sentence – calling her ex-boyfriend an ambitious and trusting person.

Six-year-old Kai’s mother Raina attested to the rapper’s dedication as a father – and tried to urge the judge to consider leniency to break the cycle of black fathers being incarcerated and therefore separated from their children.

She had also earlier submitted a support letter to the court prior to his sentencing.

In the letter, she revealed that they had known each other since childhood and she’s watched him suffer so much but always managed to get his life back on track.

“My name is Raina Chassagne and Daystar is not only the father of my child, but also my best friend. We met when I was 12 years old at Glades Middle School and have shared so much of our life together,” she wrote.

“From the earliest days of meeting each other I’ve seen Daystar offer a helping hand to so many in need all while still managing to balance and support his entire family,”

She continued: “One thing I’ve always admired about Daystar was that regardless of facing the most devastating loss, he remained dedicated towards his goals and wanted to bring new life and change to not only himself but everyone around him.

“That dedication and commitment continues to be carried till this day.

She also detailed their relationship to show Lanez’ caring and supportive side.

“Daystar has always remained resilient though immense hardship…Regardless of his circumstances, he continued to make it a priority to better himself.

“…Throughout this period he took care of me by making sure I got to school in the mornings and he just always showed so much care and affection without me even having to ask.

“Even without a stable home he was able to find comfort in the care and support of my family and me.

“My mom would also pick him up on Sundays to go with us to church and those are memories I will never forget. Through hardship he remained my rock,”

She added that having her son be with his father means the world to her.

“We both come from a history of absent fathers and to see Daystar with Kai really makes me emotional and so happy.

“He is such an amazing father and even though I carried Kai for 9 months, he still chooses his dad over me.

“Daystar is Kai’s hero and I can see the affection and love he has for his father, they even have their own secret handshake. Every week he has “Sunday Funday” with Kai and makes sure to always spend time with him regardless of his busy schedule.

“My family is what holds me together and I want to see Kai with his dad because I know what it is like without one,” she added.

Her pleas, however, did not work. Lanez was sentenced to a decade in prison.

Bail conditions

If Lanez is released, he will stay away from substances, and neither he nor his team will have any contact with Megan.

“Upon release, Mr. Peterson will maintain his sobriety, and have no contact with the victim nor shall he or any of his associates by his direction address her on social media or by other means,” Cuniff reported.

“Mr. Peterson is a well-known musician; abscond. He is a household name through his artistry and philanthropy.”

Even though Lanez is hopeful for a release, it will be a challenging battle. According to interviews Cuniff had with various attorneys, it’s uncommon for bail motions pending appeal to be granted.

“Generally, to get bail pending appeal, you have to show a substantial likelihood of prevailing on appeal, which often means a substantial likelihood you can show error by the trial judge,” attorney Michale Freedman told Cuniff in an email.

“So it’s pretty rare for the trial judge to find the defense can make this showing about the same judge’s own rulings, especially after the judge has already denied post-trial motions raising those same arguments.”

Lanez—who’s been in custody since Dec. 23, 2022—is currently in the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles where he is awaiting transport to state prison.
