Paul Robitaille, a Florida Sheriff’s deputy committed suicide right outside the Highlands County Sheriff’s office where he was worked.

Robitaille took his life on Wednesday, January 31st 2024.

He shot and killed himself outside the Highlands County Sheriff’s office whilst on duty.

According to the Highlands County Sheriff’s office, Robitaille asked his supervisor for a break whilst on duty earlier Wednesday at the Highlands County Courthouse.

He then stepped outside for a bit and was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the HCSO headquarters.

“At no time did Deputy Robitaille give any indication something was wrong,” the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office wrote.

“A short time later, he was found near the northeast corner of the HCSO headquarters, deceased from a self-inflicted wound.”

“Paul was a great employee with a great attitude. We are all shocked and heartbroken over this and I ask that everyone keep his family, friends and our agency family in their prayers,” Sheriff Paul Blackman said.

“The Sheriff’s Office is doing everything possible to comfort and support Paul’s family, as well as all of our members, to help everyone get through this.”

Paul Robitaille was 56 years old and had served with the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office since March 5th 2007.

He leaves behind a wife and three children- with one of his daughters being a part-time deputy with the Highland County Sheriff’s Office.

Robitaille’s suicide comes weeks after a similar incident involving a New Jersey officer.

Passaic County Sheriff, Richard H. Berdnik shot and killed himself in a public setting – inside a restaurant.

According to reports, Berdnik died inside Toros, a Turkish restaurant located on Hazel Street.

Berdnik went into the bathroom at Toros on Hazel Street, and soon after, people in the restaurant heard a gunshot, the sources said.

The incident happened just after 3:30 p.m Tuesday, January 23 2024.

Berdnik, a retired Clifton police officer, had been the county sheriff since 2011 and won reelection in November 2022 for a fifth three-year term. He was in his mid-60s.
