Honolulu police responded to a 911 call about an argument at the house in the city’s Manoa neighborhood early Sunday but initially left when no one answered the door.

Officers returned about 30 minutes later after getting a second call — and this time gained entry, finding the five bodies, including a 12-year-old boy and two girls, ages 10 and 17, Lieutenant Deena Thoemmes of the murder squad told a press conference.

“Based on the evidence found at the scene and the investigation thus far, it appears that the adult male killed the female and the juveniles with the knife that was recovered at the scene,” Thoemmes said

Authorities did not formally identify the family but neigbors told KITV that the Oda family lived in the upstairs of the home.

A second family rented the downstairs unit but had left for a trip to Japan on Saturday.

“It’s concerning, neighbors are kind of scared, usually we don’t have a lot of crime around here its real quiet, so everyone wants to be safe and make sure everyone is okay, but it’s just something that doesn’t happen here,” said neighbor Aime Wakai to KHRON 2.

One person who spoke to HNN did say he sensed something was wrong.

“It didn’t feel right,” he said. “You could see something — like they were sad.”

HPD Chief Joe Loga said the murders did not appear to be a random act. The motive is under investigation.

Hawaii

Hawaii is an island state of the United States, in the Pacific Ocean about 2,000 miles (3,200 km) southwest of the U.S. mainland.

It is the only state not on the North American mainland, the only state that is an archipelago, and the only state in the tropics.

Hawaii consists of 137 volcanic islands that comprise almost the entire Hawaiian archipelago (the exception, which is outside the state, is Midway Atoll).

Spanning 1,500 miles (2,400 km), the state is physiographically and ethnologically part of the Polynesian subregion of Oceania.

Of the 50 U.S. states, Hawaii is the eighth-smallest in land area and the 11th-least populous; but with 1.4 million residents, it ranks 13th in population density.

Two-thirds of Hawaii residents live on O’ahu, home to the state’s capital and largest city, Honolulu.

Manoa is a valley and a residential neighborhood of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi.

The neighborhood is approximately three miles (5 km) east and inland from downtown Honolulu and less than a mile (1600 m) from Ala Moana and Waikiki.

Similar to many Honolulu neighborhoods, Mānoa consists of an entire valley, running from Manoa Falls at the mauka (inland-most) end to King Street.

The valley receives almost daily rain, even during the dry season, and is thus richly vegetated – though the valley walls are often dry.

Seeing rainbows in the valley is a common occurrence, and is the source of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa sports team names, the Rainbow Warriors (for men’s teams) and Rainbow Wahine (for the women, with the beach volleyball team more often using BeachBows).
