Paris Oda is a 46-year-old Manoa, Hawaii chiropractor in the headlines after killing his wife, three children and then ‘un@living’ himself.

Five people, including three children, were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide at a Manoa home Sunday morning.

Honolulu Police Department Lt. Deena Thoemmes, head of HPD’s homicide detail, said that the dead included a man and woman, and three children and all had been stabbed to death.

“The husband is the person who killed his wife and three children,” according to HPD’s preliminary investigation, Thoemmes said.

The victims were identified as Paris Oda, 46, his wife Naoko Oda, 48, and their three children – two girls – Sakurako, 17, and Nana, 10, and a 12-year-old boy named Orion.

Who is Paris Oda Hawaii?

Doctor Paris Oda is a chiropractor at Oda Ohana Chiropractic and Medical Massage LLC in Honolulu, HI, according to a profile on the Oda Ohana Chiropractic official website.

Paris Oda is a graduate of Western Oregon University where he gained his Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) in 2000 and the Palmer College of Chiropractic in San Jose, California where he gained his Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2005, according to LinkedIn.

He worked with Hawaii Weight Loss Centers from March 2012 till present.

Paris Oda has also been running his own practice at the Oda Ohana Chiropractic and Rehabilitation & Therapeutic Massage Clinic since graduating in 2005 and moving back to Hawaii.

Honolulu PD received an anonymous call about an argument at a home on 3600 block Waaloa Place at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, but no one responded or met police when officers arrived.

Police were called back to the house at 9:15 a.m. when officers discovered the five dead people.

Logan said the 911 caller met officers the second time and that is when officers discovered the bodies.

During a Monday afternoon press conference, Honolulu police said a preliminary investigation reveals an adult male, Paris Oda, allegedly stabbed and killed his wife Naoko Oda and their three children Sakurako, Orion and Nana before committing suicide.

Paris’ wife, Naoko Oda, sometimes worked at his chiropractic clinic but was largely a stay-at-home mom.

Daughter Sakurako was interested in nursing and cooking and was close to graduating from Iolani school and was weighing up college options between the islands and the mainland.

Naoko and Sakurako Oda ran the Hapalua Marathon in 2019, and finished three places apart.

Hawaii News Now talked to many in the neighborhood on Monday and most said whilst they didn’t know the family well, they were devastated at the details of the case.

“Tragic. Everybody is feeling it,” said neighbor Irvin Yoshino. “It feels like part of your family.”

One person who spoke to HNN did say he sensed something was wrong.

“It didn’t feel right,” he said. “You could see something — like they were sad.”

According to Honolulu police “Based on the evidence found at the scene and the investigation thus far, it appears that the adult male killed the female and the juveniles with a knife that was recovered from the scene. The motive is still under investigation,” Honolulu Police Department Lt. Deena Thoemmes said.

She added that based on evidence found so far, “these don’t appear to be random acts.”

Police are interviewing neighbors and reviewing security camera footage to find out more.

Thoemmes said the killings represented the most deadly crime in Honolulu since seven people were shot dead at a Xerox Corporation building in 1999, still the worst mass shooting to take place in Hawaii.

Reactions

HPD Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan said at the same news conference: “I’d like to give our heartfelt condolences to the families. It’s unfortunate and very sad.”

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi also issued a statement on the murders, saying that he is “heartbroken by the tragic incident … claiming the lives of an entire family.”

“This inexplicable tragedy has deeply shaken our community,” he said.

“Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends grappling with this profound loss.”

Miami-Dade murder-suicide

News reports Monday have detailed a stunningly similar murder suicide in Miami-Dade County as carried out by Paris Oda in Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii.

A Miami-Dade County man shot and killed his wife and two children, before turning his weapon on himself Sunday night, according to police.

The tragedy happened at the Royalton on the Green Apartments, located at 17500 Northwest 68th Avenue, Miami-Dade police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said.

Police arrived at the building around 9 p.m. after receiving a call requesting a welfare check on the family, Zabaleta said.

“Once the officers arrived, they noticed a distinct foul odor emitting from the apartment,” Zabaleta said in a statement.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue paramedics arrived around the same time and helped the officers break into the apartment, he said.

“As the officers entered the apartment, they discovered four persons deceased from apparent gunshot wounds,” Zabaleta said. “It appears that the father shot and killed his wife, daughter and son, before taking his own life.”

Police have not identified the family as of Monday afternoon because their next of kin had not been notified. The man was 60 years old, the mother 50 years old, the son was 18 and the daughter 13, Zabaleta said.
