Meghan Markle accepted the 2023 Women of Vision award her and equally shimmery gold dress marked a departure from her royal wardrobe.

Meghan showed via her dressing at a glittering gala in New York City last night, Tuesday, May 16th 2020 that her days of trying to ‘blend in’ are over!

Wearing a sleeveless Johanna Ortiz number with a subtle cutout at the stomach, the former “Suits” actress glowed as she accepted the award from feminist icon Gloria Steinem — and her dress might have contained a hidden message to the royal family.

While the Duchess of Sussex, 41, was known to almost exclusively wear neutrals like black, white and beige as not to “stand out” as a senior royal, she sported a bright metallic gold gown for last night’s awards show that looked more like something she would wear during her days as a Hollywood star.

“I rarely wore color,” Markle said in the third episode of Netflix’s “Harry & Meghan” docuseries, reflecting on her time as a senior royal.

The duchess — who married Prince Harry, 38, in 2018 — added that “there was thought in that,” explaining that she didn’t want to wear the same shade as another member of the family at events. “I was like, ‘Well, what’s a color that they’ll probably never wear? Camel? Beige? White?’” she continued. “I’m not trying to stand out here.”

She certainly stood out at last night’s awards, joining the Duke of Sussex along with her mother, Doria Ragland, for the elegant evening.

Along with her bold gold dress, she wore gold Tom Ford stilettos ($1,350), a Carolina Herrera clutch and a pair of J. Crew hoop earrings with chunky studs.

The event also marked the first joint public event for the Sussexes since Prince Harry attended King Charles III’s coronation, with Markle staying home in California with Princess Lilibet, 1, and Prince Archie, 4, though the couple did recently step out for a sushi dinner with Gwyneth Paltrow and other celebs.

With the coronation now over and rumors of a new blog venture on the horizon, we have a feeling we’ll see some more shimmering looks in the future.

Meghan Markle Car Accident

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were nearly involved in a car accident after a “near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi” in New York City.

A spokesperson for the couple said in a statement to PEOPLE, “Last night, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms. Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi. This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers.”

“While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety,” Prince Harry and Meghan’s spokesperson added.

The spokesperson also said, “Dissemination of these images, given the ways in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous to all in involved.”

Buckingham Palace had no comment when reached by PEOPLE.

Meghan, Prince Harry and her mother Doria Ragland were making their way back to a friend’s private residence, where they were staying, and did not want to compromise the location, PEOPLE has learned. Half a dozen blacked out vehicles pursued their car, running red lights, reversing down a one-way street, driving on the sidewalk, driving while on the phone and taking photographs in their attempts to take photos of the couple and Doria. Despite confrontations by uniformed police officers, paparazzi continued their pursuit.

The New York Police Department said in a statement: “On Wednesday evening, May 16, the NYPD assisted the private security team protecting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. There were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests in regard.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams reacted to the event on Wednesday, saying, “It’s clear that the press, paparazzis, they want to get the right shot, they want to get the right story, but public safety must always be at the forefront,” Adams said.

He added, “I thought that was a bit reckless and irresponsible.”

On Tuesday, the couple were joined by Meghan’s mother for the Ms. Foundation 2023 Women of Vision Awards: Celebrating Generations of Progress & Power at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in Manhattan. Meghan was honored as one of this year’s Woman of Vision Award honorees for her advocacy to empower women and girls.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in a sizzling gold dress were photographed by paparazzi outside the venue as they entered and exited.

Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, died in a 1997 car crash in Paris that also involved photographers pursuing her vehicle.

Senior police officer David Douglas — who was part of Operation Paget, the investigation into the various conspiracy theories surrounding Diana’s death launched by the British Metropolitan Police in 2004 — said during a 2022 interview that Princess Diana’s death was a “terrible, tragic accident.”

Host Ranvir Singh asked if it was the combination of no seatbelts, paparazzi chasing the car and the driver having some drinks.

“When you look at most incidents, accidents, you find there’s a chain of events, and if any one of those chain of events had been different, it might not have led to that happening,” Douglas said. “For example, if they’d been wearing seatbelts, our experts tells us it was probably an 80% chance that they would have survived the accident.”

In his memoir Spare, Prince Harry recounted driving through the same Paris tunnel where his mother died when he was just 12 while attending the 2007 Rugby World Cup semifinal in the French city.

On Tuesday in London, a renewal hearing into The Duke of Sussex v. The Home Office was held in the Royal Courts of Justice in London. Prince Harry’s case against the U.K. government regards his removal of his security following the couple’s decision to step down from their royal roles.

Meghan took the stage on Tuesday evening to give her acceptance speech, in which she said, “As a young girl, I would come home, I’d settle in after a day of school, pull up my TV tray with dinner and I would turn on my evening ritual: Jeopardy! And I’d glance at the coffee table, where I’d see an array of things: it could be the cat’s collar, my homework, some mail that had just been brought in — and some magazines. The magazines said Ms. on them.”

“I remember them vividly because the pictures were different. There was diversity that I hadn’t seen as often, both of color and of age and the names were different,” she continued. “There were congresswomen, there were astronauts and the topics were different — from mothering to being a working mom to heavier topics such as domestic violence, the poverty line, unearthing its roots, where it comes from and matters of equity.”

“I was too young at the time to know what most of it meant,” Meghan said, adding that despite that, “the significance of these magazines was important.”

Meghan Markle Paparazzi

Prince Harry, his wife Meghan Markle and her mother were involved in a “near catastrophic” car chase after being followed by paparazzi for more than two hours, according to his spokesperson.

But two New York police officials have played down the incident saying they do not believe the chase was “near catastrophic” and described a “bit of a chaotic scene”.

A taxi driver who picked up Harry, Meghan and her mother Doria Ragland outside the New York City Police Department’s 19 precinct at around 11pm local time on Tuesday said they were in his car around 10 minutes.

Sukhcharn Singh told The Washington Post: “I don’t think I would call it a chase. I never felt like I was in danger.

“It wasn’t like a car chase in a movie. They were quiet and seemed scared but it’s New York – it’s safe.”

Mr Singh also said he got the impression from the Sussexes that they had already been pursued by paparazzi before they got in his car.

Meanwhile, New York’s mayor Eric Adams has said two police officers could have been injured as they assisted Harry and Meghan’s private security team while their car was being followed.

The pursuit took place after the Sussexes had attended an awards ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York on Tuesday – their first public appearance since the King’s coronation.

Harry’s spokesperson said: “Last night, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi.

“This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers.

“While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone’s safety.

“Dissemination of these images, given the ways in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous to all involved.”

Julian Phillips, the deputy commissioner of the New York Police Department, has said officers “assisted the private security team protecting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex”.

He continued: “There were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests in regard.”

New York’s mayor said later: “The press or paparazzi, you know, they want to get the right shot, they want to get the right story.

“But public safety must always be at the forefront. In a briefing I received (I heard) two of our officers could have been injured… I don’t think there’s many of us who don’t recall how (Harry’s) mum died.

“It would be horrific to lose the innocent bystander during a chase like this and something to have happened to them as well.”

Mr Adams added he believes the behaviour of those following the Sussexes was “reckless and irresponsible”.

Harry, Meghan and Ms Ragland were reportedly followed by half a dozen blacked-out vehicles which were being driven by unidentified people.

The vehicles are said to have driven on pavements, jumped red lights and reversed down a one-way street.

It has also been said at least one driver was using their phone behind the wheel.

At least one other is reported to have been photographing while driving.

One of the cars is said to have illegally blocked a moving vehicle.

Those pursuing the Sussexes are said to have been confronted by uniformed police multiple times but continued their pursuit.

Harry and Meghan are thought to have been staying at a private residence and did not want to compromise the security of their friend’s home.

The Sussexes are understood to accept a heightened level of attention when they are at public events, and prior to the chase they are said to have exited and entered the New York venue publicly, allowing photographers to get pictures.

Omid Scobie, who wrote the book “Finding Freedom” about Harry and Meghan, has tweeted to say a source has said the Sussexes and Ms Ragland are “understandably shaken but thankful everyone’s safe”.

Pictures that have appeared on social media have shown Harry, Meghan and her mother Ms Ragland in a taxi.

The Duchess of Sussex had encouraged women to fight for equity at the Ms. Foundation for Women’s annual gala.

“It’s never too late to start,” she said at the event in New York. “You can be the visionary of your own life… There is still so much work to be done.”

Harry and Meghan stepped down from their royal roles in 2020 and moved to the United States partly because of what they described as intense media harassment.
