Kayla Rincon-Miller, a 15-year-old Cape Coral teen was shot and killed during an attempted robbery whilst walking to a McDonald’s after watching a movie with friends around 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Rincon-Miller and her two friends were ambushed by unknown assailants, one of whom fired a gun during the robbery attempt.

The shot struck Kayla in the chest, unfortunately killing her.

A 15-year-old girl was shot and killed while walking with two friends in Cape Coral Sunday night, Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore said during a news conference Monday.

Kayla Rincon Miller and two friends were walking to McDonald’s on Del Prado Boulevard South after leaving the Coralwood 10 movie theater when a car pulled up and blinded them with the vehicle’s lights.

Several unknown suspects reportedly exited the vehicle and attempted to rob the three girls when one of the suspects fired a gun, shooting the victim, later identified as Kayla Rincon-Miller, in the chest.

Rincon-Miller was taken to a hospital, where she died.

“One of the girls told detectives a car pulled up and blinded them with their lights, and then suspects jumped out of the car and attempted to rob them,” Cape Coral Police Chief Anthony Sizemore said.

“One of the individuals began to shoot and Ms. Rincon-Miller was struck in the chest. All 3 girls stated they did not know the shooter was.” Sizemore said.

According to her family, Kayla liked basketball, drawing and picking out the perfect pair of shoes to go with her outfit.

Her family told Winknews that coming to terms with the fact that her life was cut short is too painful to bear right now, especially considering the fact that Kayla loved staying home and in her room.

Sunday night was one of the few times she ever asked to go out with friends.

Residents created a makeshift memorial area Monday, March 18, 2024, at the intersection of SE 20th St. and SE 16th Ln. next to the location of a shooting Sunday night which resulted in the death of Kayla Rincon-Miller.

The shooting happened in the 2000 block of Southeast 16th Place in Cape Coral, Florida.

Police are seeking the identities of the suspects involved in the homicide of 15-year-old Kayla Rincon-Miller.

“It’s certainly unnerving for the general public that this happened on a Sunday night,” Chief Anthony Sizemore told Cape Coral’s Community Correspondent Colton Chavez and other reporters during a briefing Monday morning.

“We are actively seeking any information on the shooting — Ring camera, commercial surveillance from surrounding businesses, or any bystanders or witnesses who may have been present and fled at the time,” Chief Sizemore added.
