Eric M. Diaz, 22, of Melbourne, Florida, died in a fatal crash Sunday on northbound Interstate 35 near Edgerton Road.
The accident occurred around 3:15 am Sunday when a Jeep Gladiator driven by Matthew E. Karabas, 27, of Monroe, N.J., was headed the wrong way (southbound in the northbound lanes) of I-35.
Meanwhile, a Freightliner semi-truck driven by Garrido S. Chinea, 29, of Kansas City, Mo, was traveling northbound on the same lane and the two vehicles collided.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Jeep struck the semi head-on, leaving its two occupants with serious injuries.
The driver of the jeep, Matthew Karabas, was transported to Overland Park Regional Medical Center in critical condition while his passenger, 22-year-old Eric Diaz, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the semi, Garrido Chinea, was apparently unhurt.
KHP said Diaz was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash while Karabas was not. Chinea, in the semi, was also wearing a seatbelt.
