Cole Pensick died after his pickup truck crashed into trees in an area Southwest of Columbus, Ne.

Pensick was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The crash occurred about 6:45 a.m. at 141st and Q Roads on Saturday, April 8th 2023.

Cole Pensick was an (American) football player, agribusiness executive and sales representative who tragically died in an accident in April 2023. He was 32.

Pensick was born on October 10, 1990, in Lincoln, Nebraska. His parents were Dan and Bev (née Connerley) Pensick.

He grew up in Lincoln, attending Kahoa elementary school and Mickle middle school before graduating from Lincoln Northeast High School in 2009. 

After excelling in sports throughout high school including football, wrestling and athletics, he committed to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln – he was reportedly the first to commit to the 2009 class.

Cole Pensick would go on to excel for the Nebraska Huskers, becoming a key member of the Husker offensive line with great versatility throughout his NU career. He was lauded for his ability to play both centre and guard.

His outstanding play as a senior was honoured as he was a second-team All-Big Ten choice by the league coaches.

Cole was one of 19 Husker seniors who played in the Gator Bowl as a graduate. He played in 36 games and started in 14 games while at Nebraska.

Academically, Cole majored in Agribusiness and earned his bachelor’s degree from Nebraska in December of 2012. He worked for Fairbank Equipment Inc. as a regional sales representative where he worked for seven years.

His last place of employment before his death was as National Ag Sales Manager for Snyder Industries of Lincoln.

Cole Pensick died early Saturday, April 8th 2023 in a one-vehicle accident about 14 miles southwest of Columbus, Nebraska.

His pickup truck crashed into trees in the eastern part of the state after he went through a stop sign at a T-intersection in Polk County.

The truck left the road and came to a rest in trees in an area around 14 miles southwest of Columbus.

The 32-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. The crash occurred about 6:45 a.m. at 141st and Q Roads.

Investigators determined that Pensick, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was driving a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado westbound on 141st when it went through a stop sign at a “T” intersection. The pickup truck left the roadway and came to a rest in some trees.

Nebraska Football mourned his tragic death in a post on social media.

“Mourning the loss of one of our own. On behalf of the Nebraska Football program, our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends & teammates of former Husker lineman Cole Pensick, who passed away yesterday at the age of 32,” the program tweeted.

Jeremiah Sirles, a former teammate of Pensick’s, also took to social media to mourn him.

Can’t believe you are gone Cole. We came into college together, we went to battle together, we chased elk in the mountains, you were there with me when I shot my first deer, we grew into men together and we were suppose to grow old together. I love you brother,” he wrote.

Cole Pensick started his sports career during his time at Lincoln Northeast. He was a three-year starter in football whilst he finished 5th in Class-A wrestling at 285Ib.

As a junior, he captured the Class A shot put title and finished second in his senior year.

Cole was a second-team All-Nebraska performer as a sophomore, honoured for his defensive play as a senior, as he was a first-team Super-State pick by the Lincoln Journal Star and a first-team Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska selection.

He was a first-team All-Nebraska and second-team Super-State selection. His play helped Northeast to a state playoff berth in 2007.

After committing to Nebraska in 2009, Cole was a key member of the Husker offensive line with great versatility throughout his NU career with the ability to play both centre and guard, Cole’s outstanding play as a senior was honoured as he was a second-team All-Big Ten choice by the league coaches.

His NU honours include – Second-Team All-Big Ten (Coaches, 2013); Honorable-Mention All-Big Ten (Media 2013); Rimington Trophy Watch List (2013); Cletus Fischer Native Son Award (2013); Academic All-Big Ten (2013); Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll (Fall 2012, 2013; Spring 2013); Big 12 Commissioner’s Fall Academic Honor Roll (2009).

Cole Jonathan Pensick, age 32, of Columbus, Nebraska, passed away April 8, 2023 as a result of an automobile accident.

Memorial services will be held Friday, April 14, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Isidore Catholic Church, 3921 20th Street, in Columbus with Father Joseph Miksch officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 13 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at St. Isidore Catholic Church with a 7:00 p.m. Vigil.

Honorary pallbearers will be CJ Zimmerer, Brandon Chapek, Jeremiah Sirles, Brent Qvale, Nick Ash, Jake Cotton, Jake Hohensee, Aaron Leimser, Mike Gabel, and Ryan Pickinpaugh. Inurnment will take place at a later date All Saints Catholic Cemetery in Columbus. Memorials are suggested to the family in lieu of flowers to be designated later. He was preceded in death by grandparents Lavern ‘Sonny’ Pensick, H. Jerry Connerley, Lorene Connerley and aunt Barb DeBower.

  1. We were in Florida when we heard the sad news about Cole. We are so lucky to have known him. He was always so nice and fun to be with. We can reflect back to the good times at hockey and in the neighborhood. So very sorry. Cole will be in our prayers as with you Bev, Dan and Abbey.
