The investigation started after PSP received a report of a child with severe bruising from a daycare worker at the Halifax YMCA.

The girl was taken to a hospital, where it was determined she had broken bones and was the victim of s*xual violence.

A state police affidavit indicates the baby’s mother and Cugini initially claimed the injuries happened during a bathtub fall and an accident with the family dog.

But investigators say text messages showed Cugini taking responsibility and that he later told police the injuries happened while the infant was in his care alone.

Bail for Cugini has been set at $200,000 and he’s being held at the Dauphin County Prison.
