Reed Ryan went into cardiac arrest on November 21st 2023 following a workout. He was revived and sent to the ICU but sadly died seven days later on November 28th.

According to his family, Reed Ryan died due to an undetected genetic heart condition but that wouldn’t stop the speculations from popping off.

Current University of Minnesota Duluth and former NDSU defensive end Reed Ryan suffered an accident that sadly he could not recover from when he collapsed following a workout.

According to his family, Reed Ryan had just completed a workout in the weight room of UMD when he suffered the accident that would take his life.

After his workout, he immediately went into cardiac arrest.

The school commenced life saving measures to regain his pulse and then he was transferred to the St Mary’s Duluth Hospital.

He was diagnosed with an undetected genetic heart condition that unfortunately, he could not beat.

In an obituary statement, his family recounted what happened during Reed Ryan NDSU accident.

“Reed went into cardiac arrest on November 21st following a football team workout in the weight-room doing what he loved. 

“This was the result of an undetected genetic heart condition and a large, loving heart. 

“The athletic training team was tremendous in their efforts to immediately initiate CPR and regain his pulse. 

“The ICU hospital staff at St. Mary’s-Duluth were amazing in doing everything possible for him. 

“We want to especially thank Jessa, Hannah, Dawn, Sabrina, and Abbi, his teammates, the UMD coaching staff and administration–especially Forrest Karr and Coach Weise,” the obituary said.

They continued: “Reed is survived by his parents, Erin and Stephanie, his sister Robyn, his brother Chase (Paige) Parr, nephews Everett and Benson, grandmother Joanne, Great Aunt Arlene McGee, uncles Tommy Ryan and Darius (Mariah) McCurty, dog Sconnie, and many close family and friends. 

“Reed had a contagious smile and lived life to the fullest in his short years.

“Reed loved people, he could talk to anyone and prided himself on being surrounded by friends, family, mentors, and being part of a team. 

“He created his own online vintage store-Thrifted Tiger, loved to travel, collecting shoes, drawing, going to concerts, and cooking,”

Prior to his Reed  Ryan NDSU accident, he had played four seasons for the North Dakota State Bisons and had just transferred to the University of Minnesota Duluth.

In his one year for the Bulldogs, Ryan logged eight total tackles and one sack.

“Our staff and players are devastated about Reed’s passing,” UMD head football coach Curt Wiese said in a statement. 

“Reed aspired to be better every day at whatever task was at hand. He helped bring out the best in others with his positive attitude, infectious smile, and genuine care for the people around him.”

North Dakota State head football coach Matt Entz began his post-game press conference after the 66-3 win over Drake University with a tribute to Reed.

“I want the Ryan family to know that Bison nation and the Bison football team is thinking of them.”

“Reed always had a smile, you could see his impact to this team yesterday,” said Entz, visibly emotional. “He’s not here but he’s still here. He’s still part of the program. Being a dad, being a coach, I can’t imagine what their family is going through.”

“Reed was a great guy, a great friend. We were pretty close and it’s really hard to deal with,” said Bison safety Sam Jung, who came to NDSU in 2020.

“He put a ton into the program and he had four great years here and he would do anything for anyone on this team.”

NDSU football added in a statement on X on Wednesday that Ryan was “the ultimate teammate, a constant source of joy, a genuine selfless spirit, and a beloved friend.”

“We’ll miss you, Reed,” the Bison wrote. “Your legacy will live on.”

Reed Ryan NDSU accident cause of death was revealed by his family as a previously undetected genetic heart condition.

So who was Reed Ryan?

Reed Ryan was born on December 27, 2000 to his parents Erin and Stephanie Ryan in Waunakee, Wisconsin.

Playing football as a defensive end, before Reed Ryan NDSU accident he stood at 6-3, 241 pounds.

Ryan has a sister, Robyn and a brother, Chase.

His father, Erin played football at Wisconsin and Wisconsin-Whitewater. His brother, Chase also played football at Southwest Minnesota State.

Reed Ryan played football with the Waunakee High School before being recruited by North Dakota State University.

In High School, Reed Ryan was a two-time all-region and all-area defensive end under coach Pat Rice.

He won Wisconsin’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2018 and totaled 80 tackles including 37 tackles for loss and 18 sacks for a 12-1 state semifinal team.

Ryan also forced six fumbles, recovered four, and returned one for a touchdown.

He joined NDSU in 2019 but took a redshirt year with the Bison. He was a member of the team as a freshman in 2020 but played no games and only played three reserve games in his sophomore year.

In his Junior season, Reed Ryan played five games in a reserve role at defensive end prior to his accident the next year.

He made two tackles in the home win over North Carolina A&T and participated in two playoff games against Montana in the second round and South Dakota State for the national championship.

Reed Ryan was named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference Honor Roll and earned the MVFC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award.

For the 2023 season, Ryan transferred from NDSU to the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) where his tragic accident occured.

Aside from football, Reed was a prolific wrestler.

In high school, he was a four-year starter in wrestling with more than 100 career wins.

He placed fifth at the Division 1 state wrestling meet as a junior.

Reed Ryan was studying for a degree in marketing and strategic communications.

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Reed Ryan of Waunakee, Wisconsin, who passed away on November 28, 2023, at the age of 22, leaving to mourn family and friends. 

Reed is survived by his parents, Erin and Stephanie, his sister Robyn, his brother Chase (Paige) Parr, nephews Everett and Benson, grandmother Joanne, Great Aunt Arlene McGee, uncles Tommy Ryan and Darius (Mariah) McCurty, dog Sconnie, and many close family and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his mother Tiffany, Grandfather Pat, Uncle Patrick, and Great Uncle Don McGee.

Reed graduated from Waunakee High School in 2019 was the State of Wisconsin Defensive Player of the Year, recipient of the Tim Krumrie award, and State Wrestling runner up. Following, he accepted a full scholarship to play football at North Dakota State University (NDSU) for four seasons.

In 2023, he was welcomed as a Bulldog at the University of Minnesota-Duluth with #99. 

He was a three time Commissioner’s Academic Excellence award winner, a four time Missouri Valley Football Honor roll member, and earned three championship rings. 

He was committed to his lead role in Christian Athlete groups, his spirituality, and God.

Even in death, Reed was thinking of how he could help others and donated several organs, additionally Reed will be an Important part of a NCAA research study to help prevent this from happening to other athletes.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at BLACKHAWK CHURCH, 9620 Brader Way, Middleton. Service will be delivered by Associated Pastor Michael Rorabeck. 

There will be a visitation at the church on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 3:00pm until 7:00pm and again on Saturday at the church from 10:00am until the time of service.
