She was born on 12th August 1992 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Her parents are Felix Rodrigues and Zoraida Felicano.

A former University of Texas (Arlington) basketball player, Michelle graduated with a sports and exercise science degree in 2014.

Following her education, Michelle Rodriguez Shazier started her career working with special needs children at Judson Independent School District.

She’s also a real estage agent with Piatt Sotheby’s International Realty which she joined on 29th October 2020.

Shazier met her husband on social media but prior to that she was so busy with her career that she literally had no time for social media.

“So, I was new to the Instagram scene,” she said.

“My friends made my Instagram for me a little before I graduated college because I was like, ‘What is this?’”

Yet, Instagram would turn out to be how she became Ryan Shazier wife.

Michelle was scrolling through the app one day and found a photo of the cutest baby, so she gave it a “heart.”

A couple of days later, Ryan Shazier messaged her on Instagram and said she had a beautiful smile, “or something like that…like a line that most men do,” she laughs. “And I ignored him.”

“I’m in Texas, and I played college basketball. And, you know how guys in that (pro football) world have that stigma of a lot of women?” she asks, then continues, “I thought, ‘Yeah, no, it’s OK.’”

“We started having DM (direct message) conversations.

“We were both going through some things (at that time), and I was really into my Bible,”

“He instantly messaged back, ‘Michelle?’” she says.

“He knew because he Googled my area code. And that’s how we really started talking. As real friends.”

Michelle comes from a very traditional family and initially could not tell her parents what was happening.

She related a funny anecdote of how her parents kinda met her man without knowing.

She recollected watching The Steelers play the Broncos with her family.

“And it was so funny because I was with my dad and brother then, and I didn’t care for football.”

The game was a 2015 playoff game, and Michelle’s family was still in the dark about her budding relationship with #50 on the Steelers, Shazier.

“We were watching the game, and my dad says,

‘Man, that number 50 is really good from the Steelers!’”

Michelle continues, “In my mind, I’m dying laughing,” she says.

She agrees with her dad, and then her mom adds, “He’s really athletic and really fast!”

The Steelers lost the game, and Ryan called Michelle, saying The Steelers were done with the season and his next venture would be to meet her in person.

Michelle hesitated but agreed, only if Ryan would come to Texas.

Michelle told her parents about Ryan a week before he arrived in Texas.

“They were all skeptical at first, but once they met Ryan, they grew to see how genuine he is,” explains Michelle.

As the new football season was about to begin (2016/17), Ryan proposed, and Michelle joined him in Pittsburgh.

“He had already told my parents that he wanted to propose,” she admits, “but he didn’t want to wait.

“So, four months after our first face-to-face meeting, I was engaged and on my way to Pittsburgh from San Antonio.”

There was another wrinkle – Ryan already had a son and Michelle Rodriguez Shazier found herself a stepmom at 23.

The couple planned their wedding for July 7, 2018.

Michelle Rodriguez Shazier had a wedding planner, a dress and a caterer picked out. Everything was set.

But then came Dec. 4, 2017, when the Steelers met the Cincinnati Bengals.

Ryan went in for a tackle — and didn’t get up again.

He had a severe spinal injury. There were fears he would never walk again.

Ryan underwent extensive surgery and started getting better.

He entered UPMC’s Rehabilitation Institute and was discharged on Feb. 1, 2018, and transitioned to an outpatient therapy program.

Within a few months, he was out and about without his wheelchair.

Michelle says there was never any doubt whether or not they’d get married, but they both realized the logistics were probably going to change.

“I told him, ‘Ultimately, it’s up to you. What do you want to do?’” Michelle says.

“Because I knew at the end of the day, regardless, we were going to get married. I didn’t care if he was in a wheelchair, if I had to pull him down the aisle, whatever I had to do, we were going to get married.

“We had a long talk … and he was just like, ‘I don’t want to look back at my photos and be in a wheelchair.

“This is supposed to be one of the happiest days of our lives, getting married, and I don’t want to look back and think, if we had waited a little bit more, I would have been a lot better and I would have been on my feet, walking, dancing, jumping.’”

So they postponed the wedding. In the meantime, Ryan and Michelle Rodriguez Shazier welcomed their son Lyon in January 2019.

After that, they started getting ready for the wedding.

Michelle enlisted Alexis Allen, a wedding planner who’s married to former Steelers safety Will Allen, with a seemingly impossible ask: Can you plan a big wedding in less than three months?
