“He fought this terrible disease privately for several years, and with every ounce of his being.

“He told me multiple times to “never count me out” and we never did. This past week it became too much and he passed away peacefully.

“We are so blessed to have had him in our lives.  He was an extraordinary man, husband, father and good friend to many.

“Please know that he truly loved his job and this community and felt so privileged to be a part of your lives.

“You were all so good to him and thereby good to us.  Our hearts are irretrievably broken.

However, it was not to be as his doctor told him he had prostate cancer.

“I can’t even say it because, you know, it makes me emotional,” the anchor swallowed. “That was a shock. It was. You start thinking about a lot of things. Contemplate your lifespan and – what about my family? Work? And so many things go through your head.”#

“He’s so diligent about his healthcare I just thought – it just couldn’t be. So I guess when I found out, it was disbelief. Took awhile to sink in and then – how do you tell the kids?”

The couple gave it to the kids straight – there wasn’t a lot else they could say.

“I think, like mom – there was a lot of shock and disbelief,” said Lindsey of her reaction.

“Like, no way, that can’t be true, there’s got to be something missing. Then you kinda think why? Why did this happen? Why me? Why us? Why this family?”

Marissa also added: “And then you told me an hour later and I didn’t really know what to think.

“Because you don’t know what’s gonna happen. I had no idea if this meant something horrible or if it was gonna be OK for us,”
