Goury Archya revealed on X (formerly Twitter) on her account @AcharyaGoury that her son, Neel, a student of Purdue University, had gone missing.

Goury made the post Monday, January 29th that her son had been missing since Sunday, January 28th, the day prior, and said he was last seen with an Uber driver.

“Our son Neel Acharya has been missing since yesterday January 28 (12:30 am EST) He is studying at Purdue University in the US. He was last seen by the Uber driver who dropped him off at Purdue University. We are looking for any info on him. Please help us if you know anything,” she said.

Her post was replied to by the India’s Consulate General in Chicago which said, “(The) Consulate is in touch with Purdue University authorities and also with Neel’s family. The consulate will extend all possible support and help.”

Unfortunately, there was no good news to come as Neil’s body had already been discovered on Sunday but Goury Acharya had not been made aware yet.

Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office officials were called around 11:30 am on Sunday to 500 Allison Road in West Lafayette for a possible dead body. Upon arrival, they found a “college-aged male” deceased outside Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories on the Purdue University Campus.

In an email sent by Chris Clifton, the interim head of the Purdue University’s Computer Science Department Monday, he announced the passing of Neel Acharya.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our students Neel Acharya has passed away. The leadership in the Department of Computer Science expresses our profound sorrow for his passing. I am deeply saddened by his loss. My condolences go out to his friends family and all affected,” he said.

Goury Acharya education & career

Goury Acharya, Neel’s mom, works as a French / Technical Language Specialist with the French Faculty of the Savitribai Phule University in Pune, India.

The position is a part-time, remote job that she’s held since August of 2023, according to her LinkedIn account.

Previously, she worked with the French Faculty of the SIFIL Symbiosis Institute for Indian and Foreign Languages for close to three years between Jan 2019 and Oct 2021.

Prior to becoming an educator, Goury Acharya worked as a Senior software engineer for close to seven years – first from August 1999 to February 2004 with a company in San Jose then with an Indian company between February 2004 to June 2006.

Neel Acharya’s mom Goury had her first degree at the COEP (College of Engineering, Pune) in India, receiving a Bachelor of Engineering and Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering in 1994.

She subsequently moved to the States, studying for a Masters degree in Computer Engineering at the San Jose State University in 1999, before studying for a French Language and Literature translation course at Alliance Francaise in Delhi.

Neel had completed his schooling in Pune, India, before moving to the US for higher studies.

He was brutally killed by a homeless man, Julian Faulkner, inside a store in Georgia’s Lithonia city on January 16, 2024.

Saini had been helping the man for the past couple of days before the fatal attack.

Faulkner has been arrested and charged with murder.
