Afeez Agoro Oladimeji, the 2nd tallest man in Nigeria, has died after developing complications from a recent illness. He was 47 years old.

According to reports, Afeez Agoro died after a bout with illness. He was rushed to the hospital yesterday, June 14th 2023 after developing complications.

According to a friend, he was rushed to Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, yesterday evening after he developed some complications.

“I reached out to check on him as usual yesterday only to be told by someone who picked his call that he had be rushed to LUTH due to complications.

“But unfortunately, this morning I was informed he died around 7:30pm last night,” Jide Ojo-Olusola mourned.

Afeez Agoro Oladimeji was a Nigerian computer science expert who at  2.25 metres (7 ft 5 in) was considered by many as the tallest man in Nigeria.

In reality, Abiodun Adegoke is the tallest man in Nigeria with Afeez Agoro the 2nd tallest.

Afeez Agoro Oladimeji was born on 13th December 1975 in Sabo Yaba in Lagos State, Nigeria. He was born to a family of five as the last of three children to his mother, who was his father’s second wife.

At an early age, Afeez’s family moved to Akoka Yaba where he grew up and also had his education. He attended St. Finbarr’s College, Yaba.

Afeez Agoro obtained his ordinary National Diploma certificate from the University of Lagos and went further to get his Higher National Diploma certificate from the Lagos State Polytechnic. He holds a degree in Computer science from the University of Lagos.

After graduating from the Lagos State Polytechnic, Afeez Agoro went for his compulsory one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme in Kolokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Nigeria.

Afeez Agoro Oladimeji had normal growth until he developed an ailment at the age of nineteen. 

Overnight, he started falling sick mysteriously. He fell ill several times due to his rapid growth in height. His growth was so pronounced that he was soon taller than everyone in his neighbourhood, shocking everyone who knew him especially people who had not seen him in a while. Afeez Agoro told the Nation that some secondary school classmates who had not seen him for years after graduation were dumbfounded when they finally saw him after his growth spurt.

Due to the scary nature of his rapid growth and other illnesses, his father took him to a hospital. He was diagnosed with Acromegaly, known commonly as gigantism, which made him grow vertically at a very rapid rate. 

Agoro tried to combat the ailment unsuccessfully, eventually ending up at a height of 7’5″.

He was unofficially recognised as the tallest man in Nigeria and even had a television series following his life known as I Am Agoro. The reality TV Show centred around his life and what it feels like living as the tallest man in Nigeria and aired exclusively on Linda Ikeji TV (LITV).

In June 2023, Afeez Agoro Oladimeji was reported dead. According to reports, he had been ill for the past few years battling illnesses that come with his giant frame. He recently underwent hip replacement surgery and posted on Facebook May 28 that he was recovering well from the surgery.

He posted: “Thank God Almighty for a successful operation now it’s time for therapy.”

However, reports Afeez Agoro suddenly developed complications on June 14th, leading him to be rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH.

Throughout his life, Afeez Agoro battled acromegaly, a condition also known as gigantism which caused him lots of issues.

Afeez Agoro Oladimeji had normal growth until he developed acromegaly at the age of nineteen.

According to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), “Acromegaly is a rare condition where the body produces too much growth hormone, causing body tissues and bones to grow more quickly. Over time, this leads to abnormally large hands and feet, and a wide range of other symptoms. Acromegaly is usually diagnosed in adults aged 30 to 50, but it can affect people of any age. When it develops before the end of puberty, it’s known as “gigantism”.

Acromegaly can cause a wide range of symptoms, which tend to develop very slowly over time. Early symptoms include: swollen hands and feet – you may notice a change in your ring or shoe size tiredness and difficulty sleeping, and sometimes sleep apnoea gradual changes in your facial features, such as your brow, lower jaw and nose getting larger, or your teeth becoming more widely spaced numbness and weakness in your hands, caused by a compressed nerve (carpal tunnel syndrome) 

Children and teenagers will be abnormally tall.

Afeez Agoro stood at a height of 7ft 5 inches. That made him the 2nd tallest man in Nigeria behind basketball player Abiodun Adegoke’s 7ft 9 inches.

Due to the rapidly growing height of Afeez Agoro, his father built him a house that could accommodate him.

He also travelled to the United States due to his health issues. After doctors diagnosed him with acromegaly, they gave him a drug to battle it but Agoro said it didn’t really help.

Agoro has battled many issues due to his height such as difficulty landing a job, transportation problems, his health issues as well as problems finding the right clothes and shoe sizes.

Abiodun Adegoke dethroned Afeez Agoro Oladimeji as the tallest man in Nigeria.

According to Wikipedia, Abiodun Adegoke is a 2.36 m (7 ft 9 in) tall Nigerian basketball player who is currently notable for being the tallest basketball player alongside Sun Mingming. 

Referred to as “Big Naija”, Adegoke’s age is of controversy as a news report stated his age as 17 and 2.18 meters tall in the year 2016, so according to that information he is 23 or 24 years old.

At that time he had size 53 feet but the biggest shoe that he could find after much searching was a size 50. For a while, he attended the Segun Odegbami International College and Sports Academy in Wasinmi, Nigeria.

Adegoke currently plays in the MPAC Elite Youth League in Dubai.

Afeez Agoro is tall but the record for tallest man in Africa goes to a Ghanaian giant, Sulemana Abdul Samed.

Doctors told 29-year-old Sulemana Abdul Samed during one of his recent check-ups that he had reached the height of 9 ft 6in (2.89m).

This would make him the tallest man in the world!

A shocked nurse told him: “You’ve grown taller than the scale.”

Sulemana is known to everyone by his nickname Awuche, which means “Let’s Go” in Hausa. He has been diagnosed with acromegaly (gigantism) – same as Afeez Agoro Oladimeji.
