Carl Weathers was born on January 14, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

He was born to a day laborer and his wife.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Carl Weathers praised the city of his childhood – New Orleans.

He described the Southern City as “a heavy-duty city when I was a kid. That was still the Deep South when I was growing up, and we were in the bowels of the city. I wasn’t a fighter by nature. I held it all inside. It was not a happy time.

“In fact, when I’m feeling sorry for myself, I remember it as a perfectly miserable time. I think I was consciously trying to escape from a very early age,”

He was an all-around athlete in his youth, excelling in boxing, football, gymnastics, judo, soccer and wrestling. He played college football at San Diego State University and later joined the Oakland Raiders and the BC Lions in the professional leagues.

Weathers began his acting career in the 1970s, appearing in blaxploitation films such as Bucktown and Friday Foster. His breakthrough role came in 1976, when he played Apollo Creed, the charismatic and confident rival-turned-mentor of Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa, in the first of four Rocky films.

He reprised his role in Rocky II, Rocky III and Rocky IV, and his character’s legacy continued in the Creed spin-off films starring Michael B. Jordan.
