Michael Maguire’s second wife, Shelly Smith was an American actress and model who died in August 2023 from cardiac arrest.

The actor-turned-lawyer Michael Maguire revealed Smith died at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital from a cardiac arrest in a post on social media.

“I’m sorry I have not updated everyone sooner,” Maguire said in his post. “My dear, sweet angel Shelly Smith passed peacefully yesterday at 2:20 PM. Her children, Nicky and Miranda, Nathan and I were at her side and holding her hand and kissing her head and singing to her and telling her how much we loved her.

“Also, with us was Grant Stevens, my great great friend, who gave up himself to help us, understand the process of dying, and guided us through it with so much class and dignity! We owe him a tremendous debt!

“Shelley lived an incredible life! We are all heartbroken, but we are also so fortunate to have been touched by this beautiful, intelligent, compassionate and incredible soul. Life is so short. Make every second count and fill every second with love.” Michael Maguire wrote.

Michael Maguire was the second husband of Shelley Smith. She was previously married to Nathan Reid with whom she had two children, Nicholas and Miranda.

They would become the stepchildren of Michael Maguire after he became husband to their mother, Shelley Smith, in 2005.

So who was Shelley Smith? Shelley Smith was an American fashion model and actress. She was born on October 25, 1952.

Smith first came to prominence as a fashion model, appearing on many magazine covers in the 1970s and early 1980s. She then became an actress, primarily on television, working throughout the 1980s.

She had two series, The Associates and For Love and Honor, and made guest appearances on TV shows such as Murder, She Wrote, The Love Boat, and celebrity game shows in the 1980s, including Super Password, Pyramid, and Body Language.

Following difficulty in conceiving with her then-husband Nathan Ried and struggling with infertility, Smith retired from acting and obtained a master’s degree in psychology from Antioch University, becoming a marriage, family and child counselor.

In 1991, she founded the Egg Donor Program, now known as Hatch Fertility, to help infertile couples. Her services to infertile couples include locating and screening surrogate mothers and egg donors.

“When you’re infertile, you can’t control your own body, which is a horrifying thing for women. And I came to realize that if a woman could pick an egg donor, that would give her back some measure of meaningful choice about the course of having a child,” Shelley Smith said in an interview.

“Most doctors don’t offer women a choice of donors, and that lack of choice can be truly terrifying for women. The greatest loss that women may feel with infertility is the loss of control over their own genetics.

“By giving women as much choice as is possible in selecting an egg donor who is like themselves in the ways that they consider important, I give them back some measure of control over the genetic makeup of their child.”

Her services helped tons of women and families navigate the difficulties of dealing with infertility and other reproductive challenges.

Smith herself struggled with infertility for years with her first husband Nathan Reid.

They welcomed a son called Justin together in 1989, only for the newborn to die at just three days old.

Eventually, in March 1995, she was able to give birth to her twins Nicholas and Miranda after combining her own brother’s sperm with a donor’s eggs.

Smith’s brother Leigh, who had three children of his own, was just days away from a scheduled vasectomy when his sister called and asked for his help.

Shelley Smith suffered a cardiac arrest on August 5, 2023. She died in Los Angeles on August 8, at the age of 70, with her husband Michael Maguire announcing her pasing on social media.
