Mackenzie Scott was Jeff Bezos’ first wife and through their divorce settlement, instantly became one of the richest people in the world!

As Jeff Bezos trends over the announcement of his new fiance, we take a look back at arguably the biggest divorce settlement in history!

Mackenzie Scott Divorce Settlement

The Mackenzie Scott divorce settlement was the agreement reached between the world’s richest man, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his first wife of more than 25 years, Mackenzie Scott.

The settlement left Mackenzie the third-wealthiest woman in the world and one of the wealthiest people overall in April 2019.

Scott and the Amazon founder and world’s richest man, Jeff Bezos were married from 1993 to 2019 for a total of 26 years.

She met him while working as his administrative assistant at D.E. Shaw in 1992; after three months of dating, they married and moved from Manhattan to Seattle, Washington, in 1994. The couple  have four children: three sons, and one daughter who is adopted from China.

Their marriage broke down in 2019 after Scott filed for divorce.

This was after Mackenzie discovered her husband was texting sleazy photographs to his then-mistress Lauren Sanchez.

The couple reached a settlement  – the Mackenzie Scott divorce settlement which reportedly gave her $38.3 billion in Amazon stock as a parting gift from Bezos.

She received 19.7 million shares, or 4% of the internet retailer, as part of their divorce settlement – although Bezos retained voting authority over her shares and 75% of the couple’s Amazon equity under the terms of the deal.

In July 2020, Scott was ranked the 22nd-richest person in the world by Forbes with a net worth estimated at $36 billion. By September 2020, Scott was named the world’s richest woman, and by December 2020, her net worth was estimated at $62 billion, according to CNN.

After her divorce from Jeff Bezos, MacKenzie Bezos changed her name to MacKenzie Scott, with the surname derived from her middle name.

Following the settlement, Mackenzie made a pledge to donate more than half of her income to charity  – Marca reports she has since given at least $14 billion to 16,000 charities.

She gave $436 million to 84 US affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International in March 2023!

After Mackenzie Scott finalised her divorce from Jeff Bezos, she married Seattle high school science teacher Dan Jewett in March 2021.

Jewett was a science teacher at a Seattle private school to which Scott and Bezos sent their children.

In a letter published by the Giving Pledge, Jewett said he was “grateful for the exceptional privilege it will be to partner in giving away assets with the potential to do so much good when shared”.

He added: “In a stroke of happy coincidence, I am married to one of the most generous and kind people I know, and joining her in a commitment to pass on an enormous financial wealth to serve others.”

In January 2023, it was announced that Scott and Jewett had finalised their divorce after she filed in September 2022.

Jewett didn’t contest the divorce, and they had both signed a prenuptial agreement. They had no children together.

Mackenzie Scott Foundation

The Mackenzie Scott Foundation is known as Yield Giving.

Yield Giving was established by MacKenzie Scott to share a financial fortune created through the effort of countless people,

Yield is named after a belief in adding value by giving up control. To date, our network of staff and advisors has yielded over $14,000,000,000 to 1,600+ non-profit teams to use as they see fit for the benefit of others.

According to Scott, she is inspired to give based on a passage from Annie Dillard’s The Writing Life which reads: “Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book, or for another book… The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better… Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.”

Following the Mackenzie Scott divorce settlement she reached with ex-husband Jeff Bezos, she netted close to $36bn in new net worth she pledged to help the work of her foundation and others.
