Huspuppi rose to fame for his lavish lifestyle and extravagant spending.
During his heydays, he claimed to be a real estate developer when in reality, he was a mastermind of various online fraud schemes that targeted businesses and individuals across the world.
Hushpuppi was arrested in Dubai in 2020 and extradited to the United States, where he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to engage in money laundering and was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
Early Life and Background
Hushpuppi was born on October 11, 1982, in Lagos, Nigeria. He grew up in a poor family and had a humble beginning.
His father was a taxi driver and his mother was a bread seller.
He attended Government College in Ikorodu, Lagos State, for his secondary education. He reportedly sold second-hand clothes in Lagos before relocating to Malaysia, where he spent some time before moving to Dubai in 2017.
Hushpuppi started his career as a “Yahoo Boy”, a local name for a cybercriminal who engages in romance scams and identity theft.
He later expanded his criminal network and became involved in more sophisticated fraud schemes, such as business email compromise (BEC), bank cyberheists, and money laundering.

He collaborated with other hackers and fraudsters from different countries and used various aliases, such as Ray Hushpuppi, Hush, or The Billionaire Gucci Master.
The Nigerian gained popularity on social media, especially Instagram, where he had more than 2.5 million followers before his account was deleted.
He used his platform to flaunt his luxurious lifestyle, which included exotic cars, designer clothes, expensive watches, private jets, and lavish parties.
Hushpuppi often posted pictures and videos of himself with celebrities, footballers, and politicians from Nigeria and other countries, enjoying the riches and fame that his net worth granted him.
Many questioned his source of free-flowing wealth and controversy always trailed Hughpuppi but he remained unperturbed.
Many people suspected that he was involved in illegal activities and criticized him for being ostentatious and arrogant.
Aside his controversial wealth, Hushpuppi also had several feuds with other Nigerian celebrities, such as Davido, Phyno, Olamide, Timaya, Ice Prince, Kcee, and Tonto Dikeh.
Tonto in particular was unrelenting as she accused him of being a fraudster and living a fake life.

Arrest and Sentence
Hushpuppi was involved in several high-profile fraud cases that resulted in huge losses for his victims. Some of the most notable ones are:
- In 2019, he helped launder $14.7 million stolen by North Korean hackers from the Bank of Valletta in Malta. He funneled the money through banks in Romania and Bulgaria.
- In 2019, he also helped launder millions of pounds stolen from a British company and a professional soccer club in the United Kingdom.
- In 2019, he got a New York-based law firm to transfer nearly $923,000 to a criminal account by impersonating one of its clients.
- In 2020, he acknowledged that he helped defraud someone in Qatar who sought a $15 million loan to build a school.
On June 10, 2020, Hushpuppi was arrested by the Dubai Police in an operation code-named Fox Hunt 2 which laid bare how he had built his net worth.

He was apprehended along with 11 other suspects in six simultaneous raids.
The police seized more than $40 million in cash, 13 luxury cars worth $7 million, 21 laptops, 47 smartphones, 15 memory storage devices, five external hard drives, and 800,000 emails of potential victims from their apartments at the Palazzo Versace.
The arrest was part of an FBI investigation that indicted him as being a “key player” in a transnational cybercrime network that provided “safe havens for stolen money around the world”.
He was extradited to the United States on July 2, 2020.
On April 20, 2021, Hushpuppi pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to engage in money laundering in a plea agreement with the US Department of Justice.
He admitted that he conspired to launder over $300 million from various online frauds, although much of the intended loss did not ultimately materialize.
On November 8, 2021, US District Judge Otis D. Wright II sentenced Hushpuppi to 135 months (11 years and 3 months) in federal prison.
He was also ordered to pay $1.7 million in restitution to two fraud victims: $922,857 to the law firm and $809,983 to the victim in Qatar .
Hushpuppi’s sentence was one of the longest ever imposed for a cybercrime case in the United States.
His lawyer, Louis Shapiro, said that he was disappointed with the outcome and that he would appeal the decision.
He also said that Hushpuppi had expressed remorse for his actions and that he hoped to use his influence to educate others about the dangers of cybercrime.
Hushpuppi’s fate has sparked mixed reactions from his fans and critics.
Whilst some have expressed sympathy and support for him, while others have condemned him and celebrated his downfall.
Also, it’s important to note that despite some viral news that he has been released, Hushpuppi remains in jail.
Hushpuppi Wife
Hushpuppi had a wife, Regina Manneh, before his arrest and prosecution.
Manneh is believed to have lived with Hushpuppi and their son, Raymond, in Dubai during the height of his powers.
He also has two other children with two other women – one in the United States of America and one in the United Kingdom.
Following his arrest, his wife sent a letter to the court pleading for mercy in his sentencing.
“When I heard about his arrest, my son and I were in Sweden visiting family. Unfortunately, there was a lockdown due to Covid and before we got back to Dubai, he was already extradited to the USA so there was no chance for Raymond to see his father,” she wrote.
In her impassioned letter, she described Hushpuppi as “a very active father” with whom his son spent a lot of time going out and doing activities, including watching movies.

Hushpuppi’s incarceration, she said, “has had a huge impact on us as a family but mostly on our 4year-old son.”
“As a mother, this breaks my heart for my son because he is at an age where he is aware of things and that his father is not with him physically.”
She said whenever Raymond had the opportunity to video call his father, “he constantly asks his father if he is on the way”.
“Usually after the call ends, Raymond gets emotional and just hugs me. And all I can do is offer emotional support to my son that is struggling to navigate his feelings during these hard times,” the mother said.
She said her plea for mercy for Hushpuppi was not just for herself, but “for my son and his family”.
She said Hushpuppi’s whole family depended on him financially and emotionally.
“Not having Ramon here has left a void in Raymond which saddens me,” she said.
She said she had had to start working overtime “in order to be able to pay for our child’s private school fees and his needs which has been a challenging task.”
“Ramon is a man that loves his family and would do anything for them. He is not perfect, but he is a good man that has made mistakes and he has taken responsibility. I beg this court to have mercy on him not only for me but for his children,” she wrote.

Hushpuppi built a fortune and net worth from criminality and enjoyed the fruits of his lifestyle for a long time but eventually, karma caught up to him.
