Charlie Sheen

Carlos Estévez, better known as Charlie Sheen, was born on September 3, 1965, in New York City. He was the youngest child of actor Martin Sheen (real name Ramón Estévez) and artist Janet Templeton.

His father’s parents came from Galicia (Spain) and Ireland, while his mother was a Southern Baptist. He said in 2011 that he followed his father’s Catholic faith.

He grew up with two older brothers, Emilio and Ramon, and a younger sister, Renée, who all became actors. His family moved to Malibu, California, when his father starred in The Subject Was Roses on Broadway.

He made his first movie appearance at age nine in his father’s 1974 film The Execution of Private Slovik.

He went to Santa Monica High School in Santa Monica, California, with Robert Downey Jr.

He played baseball as a pitcher and shortstop. He also made amateur Super 8 films with his brother Emilio and school friends Rob Lowe and Sean Penn using his birth name. He was kicked out of school a few weeks before graduation for bad grades and attendance.

He decided to be an actor and changed his name to Charlie Sheen. His father had taken the name Sheen from the Catholic archbishop and theologian Fulton J. Sheen. Charlie was the English version of his given name Carlos.

He started his film career in 1983, when he played Ron in Grizzly II: The Predator, the sequel to the 1976 low budget horror movie Grizzly. The film was not released until 2020.

In 1984, he was in the Cold War teen drama Red Dawn with Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, and Jennifer Grey.

He and Grey had a small scene together in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986). He also was in an episode of the anthology series Amazing Stories.

He got his first major role in the Vietnam War drama Platoon (1986). In 1987, he acted with his father in Wall Street. Oliver Stone directed both Wall Street and Platoon.

In 1988, Stone wanted Sheen to be in his new film Born on the Fourth of July (1989) but he chose Tom Cruise instead. Sheen did not know about this until his brother Emilio told him.

He did not have a lead role in any of Stone’s later films, but he had a cameo role in Money Never Sleeps.

In 1990, he played the role of a rebellious inmate in a military stockade in the film Cadence, co-starring with his father, and later appeared alongside Clint Eastwood in the buddy cop film The Rookie. Martin Sheen and Clint Eastwood directed these films, respectively.

The year 1992 saw his involvement in Beyond the Law, a film featuring Linda Fiorentino and Michael Madsen. Recognition for his contributions came in 1994 when Sheen was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In 1997, Sheen ventured into film writing with Discovery Mars, a direct-to-video documentary exploring the question, “Is There Life on Mars?” The following year, he not only wrote but also produced and starred in the action movie No Code of Conduct.

Transitioning to television in 2000, Sheen joined the cast of the sitcom Spin City for its last two seasons, replacing Michael J. Fox.

His performance earned him two ALMA Award nominations and his first Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy. The series concluded in 2002.

In 2003, Sheen embraced a new role as Charlie Harper in the CBS sitcom Two and a Half Men, loosely based on his own bad boy image.

The show brought him an ALMA Award, three Emmy nominations, and two Golden Globe nominations. During the eighth and final season, Sheen earned a staggering $1.8 million per episode.

However, production on Two and a Half Men halted in January 2011 as Sheen underwent his third rehabilitation attempt in 12 months.

CBS canceled the remaining episodes after Sheen made offensive comments about the series creator, Chuck Lorre, leading to his contract termination on March 7, 2011. Ashton Kutcher replaced him.

Sheen, who has been married three times, is the father of five children and a grandfather.

His oldest daughter, Cassandra Estevez, is from a previous relationship, and through her, he has a granddaughter named Luna.

On September 3, 1995, Sheen married his first wife, Donna Peele, but they divorced in 1996.

His second marriage was to actress Denise Richards in 2002, resulting in two daughters born in 2004 and 2005.

The marriage ended in 2005, with Richards citing Sheen’s substance abuse and threats of violence in her divorce filing.

On May 30, 2008, Sheen married Brooke Mueller, and they welcomed twin sons, Bob and Max, on March 14, 2009. Sheen filed for divorce in November 2010.
