The district attorney — who described the “terrible tragedy” as a “domestic violence situation” — said a gun was found near the husband’s body.
He declined to say whether all three family members were shot dead — and by whom.
Morrissey said he was waiting for the medical examiner’s ruling, which was expected later Friday, before deciding whether to refer to the incident as a murder-suicide.
“Although the investigation is at a very preliminary stage, the evidence available at this time does not indicate the involvement of any outside party, but suggests that this is a deadly incident of domestic violence,” his office said in a statement.
“It is not believed that there is any ongoing danger to the Dover community related to this incident.”
The grim discovery was made after a relative had stopped by to check on the family members after not hearing from them in several days, the district attorney said.
He added that there have been no prior police reports or domestic incidents tied to the home.
“I hate to see it at any time,” Morrissey said of domestic violence incidents. “I think some of the tensions that people feel in relationships often come out around the holidays.”
Morrissey revealed a gun was found next to the father, however, he refused to elaborate on how the family died.
“I don’t know who it was registered at this time, that’s part of the ongoing investigation,” the district attorney told reporters on Friday.
“We will not tell you at this time where it was found, but it was found near the husband, I’ll just leave it at that.”
Morrissey added that there is no history or police reports at the home or any complaints from neighbors about the family.
“It’s very rare to have this kind of violence or situation almost in any community in Norfolk County, particularly Dover,” he said, citing the last murder in the county reported was in 2020.
State property records obtained by CBS affiliate WBZ-4 show the vast property, named Enchanted Acres, was built in 2000 and spans more than 19,000 square feet, featuring 11 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms.
It was last sold in 2022 for $3 million and is currently estimated to be valued at more than $5.9 million, according to records.
