The sad death of Tafari Campbell was reported on Monday, July 24th 2023 after he died whilst paddleboarding at Martha’s Vineyard.

Who Was Chef Tafari Campbell?

Chef Tafari Campbell was an American sous chef and amateur golfer who died paddleboarding at Martha’s Vineyard in June 2023.

Tafari Campbell was born in 1978 in Dumfries, Virginia. Chef Tafari Campbell was 45 years of age and worked as a sous chef in the Obama White house and was later asked to stay on as the Obamas chef.

He died during an accident on a paddle boarding trip near the Obamas’ Massachusetts home.

Tafari Campbell was visiting the Massachusetts island from his home in Virginia when he went missing in the waters of Edgartown Great Pond on Martha’s Vineyard. Police say the Obama family was not home at the time of the accident.

The shocking news also comes on the heels of a similar water related death – that of Quad Webb’s great niece, Aryanna Rice.

Police launched a search on Sunday night for “a male paddleboarder who had gone into the water, appeared to briefly struggle to stay on the surface, and then submerged and did not resurface,” according to a police report.

The report added: “Another paddleboarder was on the pond with him at the time and observed him go under the water,” 

The drowned body of Tafari Campbell was found Monday, “approximately 100 feet (30 meters) from shore at a depth of about eight feet”. 

The Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit is investigating his death, but it is believed to have been an accident.

Tafari Campbell was chef for the Obamas ever since America’s first Black President left the White House.

Reports say he worked for the Obamas during their time in the White House and he was asked to join their staff as a personal chef when leaving the White House and he agreed.

“He’s been part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he’s gone. Today we join everyone who knew and loved Tafari – especially his wife Sherise and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin – in grieving the loss of a truly wonderful man.” the Obamas mourned their chef Tafari Campbell in a statement.

“…He was a talented sous chef at the White House – creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together,” Mr Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama said in their statement released Monday, July 24th 2023.

The late chef for the Obamas, Tafari Campbell is survived by his wife Sherise and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin.

In October 2020, Tafari Campbell took to his Instagram handle to celebrate his wife on their 21st anniversary as a couple!

Campbell appeared very happily married and often shared photos with his wife on multiple fun outings.

Indeed, aside posting about his food, the one thing Tafari Campbell constantly posted about was his wife, Sherise Campbell.

It’s obvious the death of Tafari Campbell will hit her hard as well as their children, Xavier and Savin Campbell.

As already stated, Tafari Campbell — a former White House sous chef who later became the Obamas’ personal chef — died on Monday in a paddle boarding accident near the Obamas’ Katama estate in Martha’s Vineyard.

Massachusetts State Police confirmed Campbell’s death in a news release that Campbell was recovered by divers from a pond on Edgartown Great Road shortly before 10 a.m. ET.

“Shortly before 10 AM the body of the missing paddle boarder was recovered from Edgartown Great Pond by Massachusetts State Police divers. MSP Underwater Recovery Unit divers made the recovery after the victim’s body was located by a Massachusetts Environmental Police Officers deploying side-scan sonar from a boat,” the statement read.

“As previously noted, the victim is a 43-year-old male. His name is not being released at this time; we expect to release his name later today.

“The recovery was made approximately 100 feet from shore at a depth of about eight feet.

“The investigation into the fatality is being conducted by the State Police Detective Unit for the Cape and Islands District and Edgartown Police,” it concluded.

Following his death, people have been reacting on some of Tafari Campbell posts on Instagram with interesting claims.

“The FBI doing what they do best.. this wasn’t ab no drowning, he knew something he wasn’t to know or hear. RIP 😓❤️,” one comment read.

Another stated: “He knew too much and was killaried,”

Obama Chef

Tafari Campbell worked admirably as a chef for the Obamas during their time in the White House.

They were so impressed with his work they asked him to stay on as their personal chef when they left the White House.

In a joint statement reacting to the death of their chef, the Obamas – Barack and Michelle – eulogised him immensely.

“When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House — creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together,” the Obamas said about their deceased chef in a joint statement sent to PEOPLE. 

“In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter.” The statement continued, 

“That’s why, when we were getting ready to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed. He’s been part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he’s gone.” 

“Today we join everyone who knew and loved Tafari — especially his wife Sherise and their twin boys, Xavier and Savin — in grieving the loss of a truly wonderful man,” they added.

Edgartown Great Pond

Obamas chef, Tafari Campbell died paddling on Edgartown Great pond.

“Edgartown Great Pond is an 890 acre (at high water) brackish coastal pond located on the South Shore of Martha’s Vineyard.  It is a Massachusetts Great Pond. A thin strip of beach called a “barrier beach” separates the shoreline of the Pond from the Atlantic Ocean,” according to the Massachusetts paddler.

“Four times a year the narrowest portion of the barrier beach is cut open to the Atlantic Ocean.  The influx of salty water from this cut to the ocean increases the salinity, reduces the temperature, and refreshes the Pond with tidal flushes throughout the duration of the opening.  

“Over the course of time the tides begin to fill in the cut and the barrier beach heals itself.  The tradition of cutting the Pond comes from the Wampanoag Tribe who historically dug the opening in the barrier beach to maintain the water quality for their fishery.  Read more at the Great Pond Foundation below,”

Tafari Campbell went missing when paddleboarding on the Edgartown Great Pond.

“The paddle boarder who was recovered from Edgartown Great Road today is identified as Tafari Campbell, 45 (not43/44 as initially reported) of Dumfries, Virginia. Mr. Campbell was employed by former President Obama and was visiting Martha’s Vineyard at the time of his passing. President and Mrs. Obama were not present at the residence at the time of the accident,” a police statement said.
