Walt Garrison had a couple of wives throughout his life on this planet.

The first wife of Walt Garrison was Pamela Philips, whom he married on June 30th 1967.

He divorced her on August 30 1985, according to IMDB.

Barely a year later on August 23 1986, Walt Garrison married his second wife, Debbie Garrison.

Walt met Debbie Garrison on the rodeo circuit, where he competed in the off-season and she competed as well.

He was on an ‘endorsement’ round when they met and struck up a bond.

“He was promoting tobacco products, and I also had promotions. We became acquainted when we’d run across each other at western store openings and such.” Debbie Garrison told the Oklahoman about meeting her husband.

In August 1986, Walt Garrison married second wife Debbie and they had a fruitful marriage for almost two decades after, divorcing in 2005.

So who was Walt Garrison wife Debbie? She was a rodeo queen who had always been into the sport since she was little and decided to go pro once she grew up.

Debbie Garrison was crowned Miss Rodeo America in 1979.

She also joined the Pro Women’s Rodeo Association and competed, often performing admirably.

“In rodeo queen contests, some people think it’s rigged. But when it comes to rodeoing, it’s a totally different deal. This is based only on your performance,” she said.

During their marriage, the couple lived in Argyle, Texas, and made sure to be close to the rodeo.

“We have 23 acres and we live above a horse barn. We built it that way so we can hear the horses if something goes wrong,” Debbie said.

“Our goal was to have a place of our own where we could live, have horses and have an arena.”

Walt Garrison and his wholesome marriage to his wife would come to an end in 2005 and produced two children – his son Marty being the most prominent.

Net worth

According to several sources, Walt Garrison had a net worth of around $15m, although this isn’t official hence take it with a grain of salt.

He made money from his NFL career playing for the Dallas Cowboys and was a longtime spokesperson for Skoal smokeless tobacco during his lifetime.

Walt Garrison also wrote a book, his memoir Once a Cowboy with writer John Tullius.

The title references not only to his rodeo cowboy career, but also to his career with the Dallas Cowboys, and his college career with the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

He also served as television spokesman for Bill Utter Ford near Denton, as well as owning several properties, most prominent being a house in Argyle, Texas.

It should be noted that Walt Garrison and wife Debbie had a major blow to their net worth after being duped by a ‘trusted’ friend.

Walt Garrison claimed his advisers duped him and his ex-wife into buying risky Auction Rate Securities that cost them $3.8 million when the market collapsed.

The Garrisons claim that James Montgomery, a friend of the couple and Walt’s former teammate, misrepresented ARS as the “equivalent of cash” and suitable for conservative investors.

The couple sued Montgomery and his employer, Oppenheimer & Co., in Denton County Court, alleging negligence and securities fraud.

The Garrisons say Montgomery neglected to tell them that the value of ARS is tied to regular auctions that could fail.

That’s what happened in February 2008, “stranding” the couple with $3.8 million of worthless securities, according to the lawsuit.

Garrison and his ex-wife, Debbie Garrison, a former Miss Rodeo America, characterize themselves as conservative and unsophisticated investors who relied upon Montgomery’s advice.

They say Montgomery advised them from 2003 until 2008, and continued to work with both even after their 2005 divorce.

Cause of Death

Walt Garrison was announced dead on Thursday, October 12th 2023 with the revelation he had died overnight.

The Dallas Cowboys announced Garrison’s death on its website but did not reveal a cause of death.

“Forever a Cowboy; Walt Garrison passes away at 79,” the team wrote and added a lenghty tribute.

Garrison played 119 regular season and 13 playoff games for the Cowboys over nine seasons and still ranks fourth on the club’s all-time list for average yards per rush (4.32) and is ninth in career rushing yards (3,491)

He was also a cowboy in the literal sense, performing in rodeos during the offseasons and even, for a while as a rookie, the night before home games.

From nearby Denton, Texas, Garrison became hooked on rodeo at a young age and excelled at steer wrestling in particular (or ‘bulldogging’ in the vernacular).

In fact, Garrison, who passed away last night at the age of 79, was almost as good at rodeo as he was at football and actually enjoyed it more.
