Nollywood actress turned politician, Funke Akindele, has sadly and abruptly lost her mother, Pastor Mrs R. B. Adebanjo-Akindele.

The news was revealed and broken by the actress’s older sister, Olubunmi Akindele, on her official Instagram page on the evening of Tuesday, February 7th 2023.

The statement read, “It is with heavy hearts, but in total submission to God Almighty that the ADEBANJO and AKINDELE families announce the passing of their daughter, mother, grandmother and sister, DR. R B ADEBANJO-Akindele, which occurred on Tuesday 07 February 2023.”

“May her gentle soul begin its rest eternal in peace? Amen. Obsequies in honour of her passing shall be announced in due course.” She added.

Details on what happened to Funke Akindele mother remain scant. The family only put out a short statement to announce her passing and Funke herself has remained mute.

The actress is currently running to be a deputy governor of Lagos.

Akindele is the running mate of Olajide Adediran, aka Jandor, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos, the commercial hub of Nigeria.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, condoled with the deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Funke Akindele, over the death of her mother, Dr. Adebanjo-Akindele.

This was made known by his Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, in a statement on Tuesday.

The governor prayed for peace, comfort, courage and love for Funke, her immediate siblings, and the Adebanjo and Akindele families, as they go through a most difficult period of mourning of the dead.

The statement read in part, “My heart goes out to Funke, friends of the Adebanjo and Akindele families on the demise of their daughter, mother and grandmother, Dr. RB Adebanjo-Akindele who answered the ultimate call today, Tuesday, February 7, 2023.”

Funke Akindele’s father was Godwin Akindele, a retired school principal with origins from Ikorodu.

Godwin Akindele died on 7th December 2019 after a brief illness.

The “Jenifa Diary” actress took to her Instagram page at the time to announce the passing away of her father.

She posted a photo of herself with her late father who was a retired school principal, along with the caption: “Dad!!! May your soul Rest In Peace!! I tried Dad! I did!! We love you but God knows best!!! #iwishicanturnbackthehandsoftime”

Olufunke Ayotunde Akindele-Bello was born on 24th August 1977) in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. She is the second of three children (two girls and one boy).

Her mother was a medical doctor while her father was a retired school principal.

Akindele attended Grace Children’s School in Gbagada, Lagos State.

She obtained an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Mass Communication from the former Ogun State Polytechnic, now known as Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, before going on to earn a Law degree from the University of Lagos.

Akindele is a Nigerian filmmaker, director, actress, politician and producer. She starred in the sitcom I Need to Know from 1998 to 2002, and in 2009, she won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

She rose to fame for her role in the movie titled Jenifa which earned her the nickname Jenifa.

The Omo Ghetto trilogy contributed to her fame.

On 26 May 2012, Funke Akindele married Adeola Kehinde Oloyede. The couple divorced in July 2013, citing irreconcilable differences.

Funke Akindele married Nigerian rapper JJC Skillz in London in May 2016. Their union was blessed when she gave birth to twin boys in December 2018. Akindele has several step-children.

In April 2020, Akindele was arrested along with her husband and charged to court for hosting a birthday party in honour of her husband during the period of an imposed lockdown (to tackle coronavirus).

She later appeared in a Nigeria Centre for Disease Control video to raise awareness about coronavirus. The actress and her husband were sentenced to a 14-day community service after pleading guilty to violating the lockdown order.
