Dr Nandipha Magudumana is a 33-year-old South African medical doctor and entrepreneur who is infamous as the celebrity wife of Facebook rapist, Thabo Bester.

Nandipha Magudumana is the Founder of Optimum Medical Solutions and Vitapush (IV Nutrition Therapy).

She was born in a small village known as Bizana in the Eastern Cape. She grew up in a small sleepy town called Port Edward where she attended Port Edward Primary School.

She completed her High School education at Port Shepstone High School, showing interest in sports and cultural activities – particularly hockey where she ended up representing the province of KwaZulu Natal.

Dr Nandipha Magudumana has always been passionate about medicine. Her high School was next door to the provincial hospital and being part of the Leo cultural club, visits to the hospital gave her great exposure to the hospital life and her keen interest in medical field saw her working at the local pharmacy from the age of 15.

Nandi worked on weekends and school holidays.

She is a mom to two beautiful children, Aziza and Ayana.

Her hobbies included travelling, photography, health & fitness, reading, fashion and spending time with her family.

She holds a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree (BHSc) in Biomedical Sciences, and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), both from Wits University.

Dr Nandipha Magudumana runs a cosmetics surgery company called Optimum Medical Aesthetic Solutions. She has 134,000 Instagram followers and was named one of the Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans in 2018.

As to why she started Optimum Medical Solutions, Magudumana says it was mainly to get capital to help her study further and also to help other black women to enter the medical services market.

‘I saw there was a need for African people, especially black women, to enter the medical services market. There aren’t many African black women in this industry, I thought it was important that we start entering this market and educate our people about it, ‘ she told Business Report in a recent interview.

After a successful career running Optimum Medical Solutions, she was profiled by the Mail and Guardian as one of the Healing women of 2020.

“Dr Nandipha Magudumana is the founder of Optimum Medical Aesthetic Solutions, a surgery that provides affordable cosmetic surgery treatments, and is an advocate for women’s safety and medical careers,” the publication wrote.

She received a number of accolades and recognition for this, including a spot on 2018’s Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans list. Magudumana holds a Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) in Biomedical Sciences and a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), both from Wits.

Optimum was initially a venture to raise money to further her studies, and ended up opening opportunities for other black women in the medical services space. Attracting hundreds of clients from all over Africa, the practice has evolved. “We’ve seen more women of colour enter the field, which is wonderful, as we’d like more physicians to be aware of this growing field,” says Magudumana. “Also, there’s an undeniable shift in the industry, as millennials are changing the face of aesthetic medicine. In the world of Instagram, filters, selfies and Zoom, there’s a hyper-awareness around appearances. They’re probably the generation that has spent the most time looking at themselves in history.”

Optimum has now also branched out into pharmaceuticals, in addition to dermatology and plastic surgery, providing a vital service for many. “Choosing a career where you can inspire confidence and happiness in others was what attracted me to this field,” she said in 2018. “Medical aesthetics is a field for people who are truly passionate about what they do, because you help people look and feel good about themselves.”

Her efforts don’t end there, though — another cause close to her heart is the fight against gender-based violence. “In partnership with other women, we formed a platform called Conversations with Women, which brings women together to discuss issues they are facing in the country,” she says. “Gender-based violence in our communities and country as a whole has reached an alarming rate. As members of society, we can no longer tolerate and normalise the ‘unsafety’ of women.”

Among Magudumana’s greatest career accomplishments is the expansion of Optimum Medical Aesthetic Solutions. “Within a year, we were able to move the practice to the wealthiest square mile in Africa: Sandton. We were able to create even better office space to service my clients.” Naturally, she’s a champion for women too — those of colour, and her peers in the medical field, in particular.

Sometime in the past few years, Dr Nandipha Magudumana started a relationship with the notorious Facebook rapist, Thabo Bester. The two corresponded whilst he was in prison and have been working together since he came out.

The Facebook Rapist is a South African serial rapist also known as Thabo Bester. He was caught and arrested in Alberton, south of Johannesburg in the Gauteng province of South Africa following a countrywide search in the wake of his crimes.

According to the Mail & Guardian article, in 2011 Thabo Bester was 22 years old.

According to the Mail & Guardian article, Thabo Bester told the Durban Magistrate’s Court that he was raised by his alcoholic grandmother and grandfather on a farm in Gauteng.

He said he was raped by his grandmother’s friend, and that when he told his grandmother about the abuse, it was like talking to a wall.

“My grandmother’s friend hurt me when he raped me, and I had an operation on my behind”, Thabo Bester was quoted.

His situation became worse when his grandmother died, and he had to live with his friends in a squatter camp.

While living there he was approached by a man who promised to look after him, but who had then locked him in his house for days and raped him.

In 2009 Thabo Bester the Facebook Rapist was found guilty of fraud and sentenced to six months in jail with an option of paying a R1500 fine.

“I did not have money to pay. They treated me badly in prison because they thought I was from a well-off family,” The Facebook Rapist was quoted by Mail & Guardian.

Bester was jailed for life for the murder of Johannesburg model and car saleswoman Nomfundo Tyhulu.

He appeared in the Western Cape High Court before acting Judge Judith Cloete and assessor, advocate Juliana Thayson, who sentenced him to an additional 25 years on a charge of aggravated armed robbery.

The armed robbery charge related to possessions that he took from Tyhulu after killing her. Bester, 23, stabbed Tyhulu, 23, in the chest, in a bed-and-breakfast in Cape Town in September last year. The two were on holiday together.

They met at the BMW dealership in Sandton, Johannesburg, where she had sold him a car. They started a long-term relationship before going to Cape Town on holiday.

After stabbing Tyhulu, Bester flew to Durban. On his departure from the bed-and-breakfast in the morning, he told reception staff that Tyhulu was still sleeping and not to be disturbed before 14:00.

These remarks were an aggravating factor, the judge said.

Prosecutor Samantha Raphels told the court on Tuesday that Bester’s acts were premeditated and that the robbery and murder charges should be treated as serious, separate crimes.

He should face life in prison as he was clearly not sorry for what he had done and had not been “open and honest” with the court, she said.

Bester was previously sentenced to 50 years in prison for raping and robbing two models. He was jailed for 15 years on each count of rape and 15 years on each count of robbery. Five years of each robbery sentence was suspended.

He is called the “Facebook rapist” as he used the social networking site to lure women to meet him, claiming that international modelling scouts were interested in them. Armed with a knife, he then raped and robbed them.

He escaped prison in 2022.
