Thomas Carvey married Paula Zwagerman in 1983 and they would go on to welcome two kids – Dex in 1991 and Thomas two years later.

Tragedy would strike the Carvey family in 2023 when news broke that Dex had died of an accidental drug overdose at age 32.

“Dex packed a lot into those 32 years,” Dana Carvey and his wife, Paula Zwagerman, said in a joint statement.

“He was extremely talented at so many things — music, art, film making, comedy — and pursued all of them passionately.”

In this article, we would take a look at Dana Carvey sons.

Dana Thomas Carvey (born June 2, 1955) is an American stand-up comedian, actor, screenwriter, and producer.

He is best known for his seven seasons as a cast member on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 1986 to 1993, which earned him five consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

Dana Carvey had two children with his wife, Paula Zwagerman, Dex and Thomas Carvey.

The couple had become engaged in 1981 and married in 1983 before welcoming two children, Dex, born 1991, and Thomas, born 1994.

Both of Dana Carvey’s two children were comedians following in their father’s footsteps.

The two Dana Carvey children were born at the height of their father’s popularity.

“One was born during Wayne’s World 1, one was born during Wayne’s World 2. I don’t know what that means,” Carvey said during an interview with Sirius XM.

“And when I was doing Wayne’s World 2, I had the blonde wig on. The little one came over at 2 and just looked at me and said, ‘Daddy, no funny hair,’ and burst into tears,”

“So I thought when the humans arrived, if I could find a way to stay in the business but put them number one, that’s how we played it.”

When the children were growing up, Dana Carvey moved them way from Hollywood because he said he did not want them becoming ‘Hollywood brats’.

He took a break during the height of his popularity to raise them away from the spotlight and said it did not bother him one bit to be away from fame.

“I have friends who get stressed about fading or not being as hot. I never quite engaged that,” Carvey told PEOPLE in 2019.

“I have a lot of drive to try to be the best I can be, have people be blown away by what I do and repeating it. But the other side of me is fine wherever I am.”

“My wife and I made two humans, so I thought I probably should make some adjustments based on the two humans being there,” he added.

However, with blood being thicker than water and all that, the duo both expressed an interest in comedy and he thus moved them back to help them build their careers.

He also said it was due to the fact that they had a ‘bullseye’ on their backs.

“They had this bullseye on their back, ‘Dana Carvey’s kids,’” the Saturday Night Live vet said on Conversations with Maria Menounos.

“My son actually went to a mic where they had a little flyer for who was performing, all unknown comics, and then at the bottom they said, ‘Also appearing, Dana Carvey’s DNA.’

“So I just decided to put them in my pocket. I said we’re all going to L.A., we’re going to own this,”

Both the Carvey boys had budding careers – pitching digital projects and podcasts and even opening for their dad during his forthcoming Netflix special.

Dana Carvey also worked with his two children directing and co-writing a short horror film in which they’re starring.

The eldest of Dana Carvey’s two boys, Dex was an actor and editor, known for Beyond the Comics (2014), Carpool Pandering (2016) and The Funster (2013), according to IMDB.

He died on November 15, 2023 of an accidental drug overdose.

Dex Carvey was a co-founder of the Third Wheel, a live performance venue in Hollywood founded by Mike Masilotti, Avry Ross and himself.

It provided an avenue for comics of all stripes to perform and showcase their budding talents.

Dex was also executive producer of the Weird Place, ‘an episodic sci-fi comedy adventure that will blow your mind’.

According to its description, it covers everything “from manipulative aliens to time-traveling pirates to a power-hungry mad man with a magic globe, The Weird Place has no shortage of action-packed supernatural occurrences,”

Along with frequent collaborator Mike Masilotti and Nolan Culver, Dex was also working on a comic known as the B-Sides.

The first of Dana Carvey kids was also the opening act for his father’s 2016 Netflix special, “Straight White Male.”

During the set, he joked about how his brother also went into the business, describing them as the “Von Trapp family of comedy.”

Sadly, Dex Carvey would leave the world at a very early age of just 32 when he died of an accidental drug overdose.

A family statement read: “Last night we suffered a terrible tragedy. Our beloved son, Dex, died of an accidental drug overdose. He was 32 years old,” it began.

“Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things–music, art, film making, comedy–and pursued all of them passionately. It’s not an exaggeration to that Dex loved life.

“And when you were with him, you loved life too. He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends and his girlfriend, Kaylee.

“Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are atreasure. We will miss him forever,”

The statement added an important postscript.

“To anyone struggling with addiction or who loves someone struggling with addiction, you are in our hearts and prayers – Dana & Paula,”

May he rest in peace.
