Carlee Russell made a 911 call at 9:34 pm on July 13 claiming that she has stopped at the side of Interstate 459 having seen an unattended young child on the side of the highway.

She then called a family member to report the same situation, before losing contact with them, with the line remaining open.

Russell’s car was found by police abandoned at the location she had described.

She reappeared at her parents’ house 49 hours later, on July 15, and was taken to hospital where she was briefly questioned by police.

In that interview, Russell reported having been abducted by a male and placed inside a tractor trailer truck.

Carlee Russell later admitted through her attorney, Emory Anthony, that her kidnapping claim was a hoax.

Her attorney stated: “There was no kidnapping on Thursday, July 13, 2023. My client did not see a baby on the side of the road. My client did not leave the Hoover area when she was identified as a missing person. My client did not have any help in this incident — this was a single act done by herself.

“My client was not with anyone or any hotel with anyone from the time she was missing. My client apologizes for her actions to the community, the volunteers who were searching for her, to the Hoover Police Department and other agencies, as well as to her friends and family.”

In October 2023, Judge Brad Bishop found her guilty, recommending that Carlee Russell serve one year jail time and pay $17,874 in restitution.

Bishop also recommended she pay just under $1,700 in fines.

Her story begins late Thursday, July 13th 2023 when she was returning home from the Alabama Spa where she worked.

Whilst on the way home around 9pm, Carlee Russell saw a toddler walking alone on the side of I-459 between the flyover to the Galleria and Highway 150.

She called 911 but then got out of her car to check on the child, which turned out to be a mistake.

After calling 911, Russell stopped to check on the child and called a family member to report the same details, Lowe said. The family member lost contact with her, but the line remained open.

Officers who were already en route to the location of the initial 911 call located Russell’s vehicle and some of her belongings nearby but were unable to find her or a child in the area.

UPDATE: Carlee Russell was found on Sunday, July 16th 2023 when she returned home safely.

Carlee Russel’s mother Talitha Russell said her daughter left The Woodhouse Day Spa at the Summit, where she works part time, and stopped by Taziki’s at the Colonnade at 9 p.m. to pick up food for herself and her mother.

Talitha Russell talked to her daughter at 9:19 p.m. as she was leaving Taziki’s and heading to the Hoover home she shared with her parents.

At 9:36 p.m., Talitha Russell said, her daughter was on the phone with her brother’s girlfriend when she was pulling over on the side of the interstate after saying she saw a child alone that appeared to be 3 or 4 years old.

“She called 911 when she pulled over,’’ Talitha Russell said. “She got out of the car. I think she probably let her guard down thinking 911 would be there in a second.”

“My son’s girlfriend heard her asking the child, ‘Are you Ok? She never heard the child say anything but then she heard our daughter scream,’’ Talitha Russell said. “From there all you hear on her phone is background noise from the interstate.”

A Hoover police officer dispatched Carlee Russell’s report of a child alone on I-459 arrived within three minutes, Talitha Russell said.

“Her car door was open, the engine was running, and they found her phone on the ground, along with her wig and her hat,’’ Talitha Russell said. “Her purse was still in the car. Her Apple watch was in her purse and her Air Pods as well.”

The police are still investigating the case and have not found any trace of Carlee or the child she tried to help.

”We currently are investigating every possibility. We’re certainly leaving nothing off the table.” Lt. Daniel Lowe of the Hoover PD said during a Friday press conference..

He said they have received numerous tips from the community. Each tip is assigned to an investigator.

“We have a myriad of resources,’’ he said. “Everything we have at the Hoover Police Department, in addition to our partners, is involved in this investigation right now.”

According to Carlee Russell mother, a tip was called in from a trucker who was traveling along I-459 at the time of Carlee Russell’s disappearance.

“He saw her red car with the door open and he saw a grey car with a tall brown skinned man with khaki shorts on leaning over in the car,’’ Talitha Russell said.

“The police did find some tire tracks in the grass,’’ she said. “They said because it was not a muddy area, they were not able to determine what type of vehicle it could have been.”

Talitha said it was heartbreaking that her daughter disappeared just minutes from the family home.

“She was so close,’’ she said through tears.

‘We’re just gonna scour the earth,’ Russell’s dad, Carlos Russell, told WVTM. ‘There’s no stopping us.’

The Hoover Police Department said they are partnering with many local, state and federal partners in the investigation and are ‘grateful for the outpouring of support from the local and law enforcement community.’

Police said they would continue to provide periodic updates on Twitter to relay any immediate information to the public.

‘We would also ask our community to keep the Russell family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,’ police said.

‘We are trusting God, we are staying positive, we are not allowing any negative thoughts to enter our minds so all that we are doing is trusting God, believe in God that our daughter will be brought home safely,’ Talitha Russell said to WSAZ.

She’s known to be helpful and she has a big heart,’ Talitha Russell said of her daughter.

‘And she does know not to stop for anyone … I think she kind of let her guard down thinking they were so close. And when she got out the car, she did tell my daughter-in-law, ‘I can’t just leave this little child on the side of the road.’
