Brianna Ghey, who was trans, was found lying wounded in Culcheth Linear Park on Saturday afternoon,11th February 2023.

Police arrested two 15-year-olds from the area, on suspicion of murder.

Brianna Ghey ran a TikTok account under the username @gingerpuppyx when she was alive, with her number of followers variously reported as 11,000, 31,000 and 63,000.

On TikTok, she was known for miming and dancing to popular songs.

One of her final TikToks said that she was “excluded from school”.

After her death, her TikTok account was deleted.

Ghey was stabbed 28 times in broad daylight in Culcheth Linear Park in Cheshire.

Her teenage killers were declared guilty in December 2023.

Brianna’s mother Esther said the pair had not shown “an ounce of remorse” and she had “lost all sympathy” for them.

“To know how scared my usually fearless child must have been when she was alone in that park with someone that she called her friend will haunt me forever,” she said, as her voice broke with emotion.

Her father Peter Spooner said he was “so proud” of his daughter and would never stop loving her.

“When she was little, I remember the faces she would pull to make me laugh,” he said, while fighting back tears.

“The cheeky giggle, the funny dances are engraved in my memory.”

Judge Mrs Justice Yip told the pair she would “have to impose a life sentence”.

“What I have to decide is the minimum amount of time you will be required to serve before you might be considered for release,” she said.

“I’m not going to do that this week. I’m going to ask for some reports in relation to each of you.”

On 11 February 2023, Brianna Ghey, a 16-year-old British transgender girl from Birchwood in Warrington, Cheshire, England, was killed in Culcheth Linear Park in Culcheth, Warrington.

Two teenagers, both aged 15 at the time, were charged with murder four days after the incident and later convicted.

A motive has not been established.

The police said that they were investigating “all lines of inquiry”, including investigating the killing as a possible hate crime.

The trial commenced on 27 November 2023 at Manchester Crown Court.

The two teenagers were convicted on 20 December 2023.

Ghey was a 16-year-old transgender girl and a Year 11 pupil at Birchwood Community High School.

Her parents described her as “a larger-than-life character who would leave a lasting impression on all that met her”.

According to her friends, Ghey would often help younger trans girls safely and legally access hormone replacement therapy.

They also said she had faced years of transphobic harassment and bullying before she was killed, including at school, a part of which was being repeatedly “gang beaten”.

In addition to being a student, Brianna Ghey also had a TikTok account under the username @gingerpuppyx.

Murder

On the afternoon of 11 February 2023, Ghey was found with 28 stab wounds on a path in Culcheth Linear Park by members of the public.

Emergency services were called at 3:13 p.m. and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Home Office postmortem was ordered to determine the cause of death.

On 15 February 2023, prosecutor Leanne Gallagher said the attack on Ghey was “extremely brutal and punishing”.

A post-mortem examination found that Ghey had been stabbed 28 times, across her head, neck, chest, and back.

On 8 March 2023, an inquest into Ghey’s death was opened at Warrington Coroner’s Court, and subsequently adjourned until after the trial. A pre-inquest hearing was scheduled for 17 August 2023.

Ghey’s funeral was held at St Elphin’s Church, Warrington on 15 March 2023.

A TikTok memorial account and a GoFundMe page were set up for Brianna Ghey by her friends to support her family.

It raised £70,000 in three days, and amassed over 36,000 followers on TikTok.

After Ghey’s fundraising page amassed £100,000, her family thanked people for their “overwhelming generosity” and stated the money was spent on her funeral, refurbishing her room, and the purchase of cremation jewellery for the family’s remembrance.

Some of the donations were designated for a UK children’s mental health charity.

Candlelight vigils were held across the United Kingdom, and in Dublin, Ireland in the week after Ghey’s death.

The attendance for many of these vigils numbered in the hundreds to thousands.

A Cheshire Police Investigating Officer said Ghey’s family were overwhelmed by “the messages of support, positivity and the compassion across the country and beyond”

On 13 February, a no-fly zone was instituted over the site of the killing in response to flights by drones.

Despite the no-fly zone, people continued to fly drones over the site, prompting condemnation from police.

Due to the Gender Recognition Act 2004 that prevents minors from acquiring a gender recognition certificate, Ghey’s death certificate will likely misgender her.

A petition circulated, reaching more than 13,000 signatures, for Ghey’s death certificate to posthumously reflect her gender as female.

This petition has since been rejected by the Conservative British government, who stated in response that the current policy “strikes the right balance” and that they had no plans to change it.

Who killed Brianna Ghey?

Two 15-year-old suspects, a boy from Leigh and a girl from Warrington, were arrested by Cheshire Police on 12 February 2023.

Police described the killing as a “targeted attack”.

They initially said there was no evidence the killing was “hate related”, and on 14 February, the police said all motives were being researched, including whether the attack had been a hate crime.

On 15 February, the suspects were charged with murder, refused bail and placed in youth detention.

The next day, the suspects appeared, via video link, in a brief hearing at Liverpool Crown Court.

At this hearing, Judge David Aubrey remanded them in youth detention accommodation until a pre-trial preparation hearing on 2 May 2023, in which they were to enter their pleas.

However, the accused were not required to enter a plea, and were remanded until a further hearing on 11 May.

In a pre-trial hearing on 20 July 2023, one of the suspects entered a plea of not guilty.

A further pre-trial hearing took place on 4 October 2023, during which the other suspect pleaded not guilty.

The trial commenced at Manchester Crown Court on 27 November 2023.[8] Due to the nature of the case, and the ages of those involved, reporting restrictions were put in place preventing the naming of both of the defendants, as well as any other children mentioned during the trial.[59] During the trial, the accused girl was referred to as X, and the accused boy as Y.

Both defendants were given the option of participating in the proceedings by either physically attending the court, or remotely via video link from their secure accommodation.

The case was heard by Mrs Justice Amanda Yip.

While in custody, X was found to have traits of autism and ADHD; Y was diagnosed as autistic and has selective mutism, resulting in him not being able to speak to anyone except his mother.

Reasonable accommodations were made for both of the accused during the trial.

Because of his selective mutism, Y was allowed to communicate with court by writing.

Both perpetrators were given the option to participate in proceedings via a video link, rather than in person.

The jury were also told that both X and Y could react or speak differently in the proceedings due to their diagnoses.

The trial lasted three weeks, concluding on 20 December 2023, with both defendants being found guilty of the murder of Ghey.

Jury deliberations lasted for 4 hours and 40 minutes.

Mrs Justice Yip indicated that life sentences would be given, with a sentencing hearing due to take place in 2024 to determine the minimum term.

An application by the media to publish the names of the defendants is expected to be dealt with on 21 December 2023.

BBC reports the pair crafted what they thought would emerge to be a subtle cover story.

Girl X messaged boy Y to say a “woman got stabbed” in the park.

“Holy crap” was boy Y’s reply despite the pair later admitting to police they were present during the stabbing – albeit blaming each other for the killing.

The following day, girl X messaged Brianna saying: “Girl, is everything okay? Some teenage girl got killed in Linear Park its on news everywhere.

“And why did you ditch us for some random man from Manchester. Like wtf.”

For Det Ch Supt Mike Evans, it became clear early on that the two school pupils believed they could cover their tracks.

Girl X, who has traits of autism and ADHD, even assured boy Y, who has been diagnosed with selective mutism and autism spectrum disorder, that he would not be caught, criticising the capabilities of police in the area.

“These are really high functioning, intelligent children,” said the officer, who is head of crime at Cheshire Police.

“I know people sat at home reading this will have this sort of image that they’ve built themselves.

“But actually they’re both really clever kids and very bright, very articulate.

“I think probably their downfall has been their confidence or arrogance around the fact that they thought that they could take another human life and then thought there would be no comeuppance for them and they’d never get caught.”

In memory of Brianna Ghey

Brianna Ghey was killed in February this year, at the age of 16.

Her mum, Esther, said:“The traumatic impact that this had on my family was so enormous, that I decided to help make a difference to our society to reduce the risk of this happening again to another young person.”

Mindfulness techniques in schools will allow children to process and deal with negative emotions in a healthy way – preventing mental health problems from developing in later life.

“The crime that was inflicted on Brianna is not a one off. Senseless acts of violence are happening far too often.

“I believe, to prevent this from reoccurring we need to weave empathy, compassion, and resilience throughout our society.”

The campaign is being run between Esther and the Warrington Guardian.

Our goal is to raise money to send teachers on Mindfulness in Schools Project (MiSP) training courses, which will provide more support for children of all ages – starting in Warrington, and eventually expanding.

Tom Bedworth, community reporter at the Warrington Guardian, said: “The whole town came together following Brianna’s death, and we hope everyone will get behind our campaign, too. If we can make a difference to just one child, then we will have been successful.”

– Family of a dead trans person with no GRC can apply for a GRC and reissued death certificate via statutory declaration

– Where a trans individual has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, they can acquire a GRC via statutory declaration

“One of the primary functions of a GRC has to do with dignity in death.

Where a trans individual of any age dies unexpectedly, or is diagnosed with a terminal illness and does not have the time to go through the process, a source of trauma for them and/or their family/friends may be that their death certificate will be in the wrong gender.

Allowing for a process based on statutory declaration in these extenuating circumstances is a small step towards rectifying the indignity of this scenario,”

The UK government responded: “As announced in 2020, we believe the Gender Recognition Act 2004 is effective, strikes the right balance and allows for those who wish to legally change their sex. We have no plans to change it,”
