Fast-rising superstar Tems was a Grammy winner at the 2023 Grammys after WAIT FOR U by Future picked up the Best Melodic Rap Performance award.
“Wait for U” is a song by American rapper Future, featuring vocals from Canadian rapper and singer Drake and Nigerian singer Tems.
The song samples Tems’ song, “Higher”, from her debut extended play, For Broken Ears (2020).
At the 2023 Grammy Awards, WAIT FOR U won the Best Melodic Rap performance award, making Tems a Nigerian Grammy winner.
Burna Boy
Burna Boy won the Best World Music Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards for his album Twice As Tall.
Twice as Tall is the fifth studio album by Nigerian singer Burna Boy. It was released on August 14, 2020, by Spaceship Entertainment, Bad Habit, Atlantic Records and Warner Music. Burna Boy, American singer and songwriter Diddy and Mama Burna Bose Ogulu served as the record’s executive producers.
The album is a mixture of Afrobeats, Afrobeat, dancehall, pop and hip hop. It was produced primarily by Telz, along with production from Rexxie, Timbaland and DJDS, among others. The album features guest appearances from Youssou N’Dour, Naughty by Nature, Sauti Sol, Chris Martin and Stormzy.
Twice As Tall won the Best Global Music Album at the 63rd Grammy Awards.
Wizkid
Nigerian superstar Wizkid also won a Grammy award at the 2021 Grammys.
“Brown Skin Girl” by Beyonce, Saint Jhn & Wizkid featuring Blue Ivy Carter won the Best Music Video award.
Sikiru Adepoju
Sikiru Adepoju’s Golden Drum project which he appeared on alongside other stars won the 2009 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album.
The album was composed by Mickey Hart, Zakir Hussain, Sikiru Adepoju, and Giovanni Hidalgo. It was released on October 2, 2007.
The album combines music played on a variety of drums and other instruments, human voices singing and chanting, and electronic samples and digitally created sounds. It is a blend of traditional music.
Babatunde Olatunji
The first ever Nigeria artist to win a Grammy award is Babatunde Olatunji, who won the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album in 1991.
Planet Drum was an album by Mickey Hart, a musician and musicologist who was a member of the rock band the Grateful Dead.
Musicians on the Planet Drum album were from the United States (Hart), India (Zakir Hussain and T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram), Nigeria (Sikiru Adepoju and Babatunde Olatunji), Brazil (Airto Moreira and his wife, vocalist Flora Purim), and Puerto Rico (Giovanni Hidalgo and Frank Colón).
