Luh Twizzy Mall of Africa Incident

A mob of young South Africans stormed the mall of Africa in Johannesburg in Gauteng the past weekend in an apparent Luh Twizzy challenge.

The infamous Luh Twizzy challenge, which has been around for a while, sees teenagers storm a mall, cause chaos and leave.

The viral Tiktok trend has raised tons of concerns among Gauteng residents and sparked a conversation on social media.

In the weekend incident,  teenagers are seen cramped on a single escalator at the mall of Africa in Johannesburg as mall users take videos of them.

In another video, teenagers can be seen walking through the mall and running through the outdoor restaurant area as shoppers go about their business.

Initial reports claimed one person had died but the management of the Mall of Africa later debunked the claim.

The mall said it had a zero-tolerance approach to disruptive behaviours on its premises.

Our utmost priority is to ensure that our shoppers, tenants and staff remain well protected whilst frequenting our shopping centre.

“We are working closely with SAPS officials and our private security firm to investigate this matter further and to mitigate any future disruptions to our retail community.”

Luh Twizzy challenge meaning

The Luh Twizzy challenge is a viral Tiktok trend which sees kids dress up, storm a predetermined venue, cause chaos and leave.

It appears to have originated from fans of American rapper Yeat.

The recent mall of Africa incident, where young South Africans stormed the Johannesburg mall, has raised questions such as what is Luh Twizzy?

Ayanda Ntuli, a 702 Radio digital content producer, said the Luh Twizzys were fans of a rapper called Yeat and Playboi Carti.

“Fans are mostly in high school and roam around and drink and smoke weed. They mostly wear black. Yeat has no links to these kids. He raps about cars and money,” he said.

The Luh Twizzy movement generally hide their faces and wear mostly black outfits. with skeletal printouts inspired by Yeat.

It is not a recent phenomenon as social media experts mention it has been around for a while.

Many teenagers caused chaos last year at Montecasino in Johannesburg. The same thing happened in Protea Glen, a suburb of Soweto, according to Sarah Hoffman, a digital parenting expert and co-founder of Klikd.

They almost always hide their faces in the TikTok posts. The drivers of this behaviour are not really clear. A lot of this is mob psychology-based,” she said to TimesLIVE.

However, another social media expert,, Bronwyn Williams, told Newzroom Afrika that South Africa’s offshoot Luh Tizzy is a way for youth frustrated with the political system to protest.

…It’s a reflection of how youth are dealing with our current political situation. The established political parties run by very old people who don’t reflect the issues that young people have. Basically involved in a stalemate that’s not going to make the lives of any young South Africans better right now.

“There is instead a sense of frustration among the youth in the real world here in South Africa that there is nothign in politics for them. None of the conventional channels are going to solve their problems.

So you have this sort of youthful energy that has no way to be used productively now spilling over into these sort of anarchist, nihilist movements that we’re seeing,” she said.

Netizens on Twitter were none too pleased about the incident.

“This Luh Twizzy nonsense is what happens when you let social media & American rap music raise your children, it results in this unhinged juvenile delinquency. You fix this by bringing back compulsory military service to instil discipline. #ItsMySouthAfrica #uMjoloWithAzola,” a netizen wrote on Twitter.
