One close friend told The New York Post that for the last seven years, Samsonova had been living off of jackfruit and sweet durian, a pungent tropical fruit with a custard-like texture. Another friend said that they watched her “melt before our eyes” but she believed “everything was fine.”

“Only her eyes, merry eyes, and gorgeous hair compensated for the dreadful sight of a body tortured by idiocy. Forgive me if it sounds harsh,” the friend told the publication.

Zhanna Dart reportedly posted an eerie Instagram story two weeks before her death.

According to the New York Post, Zhanna Samsonova posted in an Instagram story two weeks before her death on 21 July.

Zhanna’s tragic story is a warning to anyone who follows an extreme diet without proper medical supervision. While veganism can have many benefits, it can also be dangerous if not done correctly. Zhanna’s death is a reminder that balance and moderation are key to a healthy life.

Zhanna Dart vegan often spruiked “mono meals” across her social media and uploaded videos of herself consuming just a dozen cherry tomatoes with an avocado in one sitting.

Other posts show her eating colourful raw dishes including soups, smoothies and a vegan “avocado salami pizza” – made up of nuts, vegetables and spices.

“Despite the fact that I cook fancy raw dishes, I eat very simple myself. My food is simple, no oil, no salt, no dehydrated food and no protein,” Zhanna Dart vegan would say of her restrictive diet.

Zhanna Samsonova also known as Zhanna Dart was a 39-year-old Russian influencer, who had a passion for raw vegan food.

She shared her colorful creations of soups, smoothies and pizzas made from nuts, vegetables and spices on her Instagram page, where she had thousands of followers. She also advocated for “mono meals”, eating only one type of food at a time, such as cherry tomatoes with avocado.

However, a dark reality existed behind Zhanna Samsonova’s vibrant online life. She had been living off of a diet of exotic fruits, such as jackfruit and durian, for the last seven years. She moved to South-East Asia to pursue her fruitarian lifestyle, but it took a toll on her health. She became severely malnourished and developed a “cholera-like infection” that eventually killed her on July 21 in Malaysia.

Her friends and family were shocked and saddened by her death. They said they tried to help her, but she refused to listen. She believed she was fine and that her diet was healthy. She even posted on Instagram in June, saying she was looking forward to fruit season in Thailand and gaining weight.

On her social media platforms, Zhanna Samsonova would gush about her decision to live such an extreme life. She claimed watching her friends looking far older than their ages due to consuming ‘junk food’ convinced her to take the path she took.

“I see my body and mind transform every day,” Zhanna Dart gushed about the diet that eventually kill her.

“I love my new me, and never move on to the habits that I used to use.”

Zhanna Dart created her own raw vegan recipes, with another friend noting that simply looking at her, they could tell she would eventually die.

Unfortunately, she listened to no counsel.

“You don’t need to be a doctor to understand where this will lead,” one friend said.

While a raw foods diet can have multiple health benefits — including weight loss, improved heart health and a lower risk of diabetes — there are downsides to this regimen, especially when not well planned, according to Healthline.

These include deficiencies in calcium and Vitamin D, which are needed for strong bones.

This can also lead to suboptimal B12 levels, which can result in anemia, nervous system damage, infertility, and heart disease.

Ritika Samaddar, the Regional Head, Nutrition And Dietetics, Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi, reacted to Zhanna Samsonova’s death thus: ““Purely going by what she posted, it’s a miracle that she survived that long. Considering that she was living only on raw jackfruit, she was clearly suffering from a severe deficiency of protein, iron, calcium and vitamin B12,”

“Please understand that a vegan diet is only about plant foods and no dairy products. This means that the sources of protein are really restricted. And when you are having a raw vegan diet, the sources of essential nutrients are restricted further,” she added.

“We should get at least 25 per cent of our energy from fats. In the absence of fats from an uncooked diet, fat-soluble vitamins, like vitamins A, E, D and B12, won’t get absorbed by the body. There could be a severe deficiency of micronutrients like iron and calcium. Remember that iron, calcium, vitamin D and vitamin B 12, which are crucial for smooth functioning of body processes, are only available from non-vegetarian or dairy sources. Calcium and Vitamin D determine your bone health.

“Sub-optimal levels of vitamin B12 can result in anaemia, nervous system damage, infertility and heart disease. In their absence from your dietary sources, you would need supplements to stay healthy. One study found that all those who lived only on a raw vegan diet had less than the recommended 2.4 mcg of vitamin B12 per day,”

In a post shared during the pandemic, she attempted to explain her philosophy as a vegan.

“💥2020 Great Awaking Time💥 We are living in time of Exception. A time when the existing order is open to question. 2020 Great Awakening time ! Time of transformation through the pain. A millions of people are waking up right now…the system is collapsing…. We’re not crazy we just awaking up! Realize how power we’re!

“We’re are so powerful is unbelievable!  That’s the time! Perfect timing! Time for coronation!  We are the power! No more time to be a sheeps! We’re the lions and we have a law to walk through to the deep jungle without any fear! And that’s how a big shift coming on the planet!

“The time when we all of us has to put ourselves on the tron! We didn’t come here to be just to be a slaves and be a locked up , we come here to bring a good changes!” Zhanna Dart vegan wrote.

The death of Zhanna Samsonova is a cautionary tale about the dangers of restrictive diets. While a vegan diet can be healthy, it is important to make sure that you are getting enough calories and nutrients. If you are considering following a restrictive diet, it is important to talk to your doctor first.

Born Zhanna Samsonova on December 2nd 1983, Zhanna Dart had celebrated her 37th birthday on December 2nd 2020 with a touching message celebrating her maturity – noting how she made her raw veganism ‘look good’.

“Those who know me know that I don’t typically make a big deal of my birthdays, but for some reason, this year seems a little bit different. I feel like a grown-up. I feel more in tune with myself. I feel that I am in a position to become all forces has intended for me to be. In addition to that, I make this look good!” she had written at the time.

A study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that 100% of participants on a raw vegan diet ingested less than the recommended 2.4 mcg of vitamin B12 per day.

A comprehensive review, published in the medical journal, Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases, in September 2022, found that the vegan diet was often promoted as being good for heart health but eliminating consumption of animal products caused nutritional deficiencies and could lead to negative consequences.

“As fundamental as diet is to health, you need to keep in mind the diet for which we’ve been adapted genetically,” said James O’Keefe, MD, the study’s lead author and director of preventive cardiology at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute.

“Animal-based foods have been an important part of the human diet for at least three million years. Eliminating all animal foods would be like deciding you’re going to feed a tiger tofu and expect that it’s going to be healthy. If you want an organism to thrive, you should feed it the diet for which it’s been genetically adapted via evolution down through the ages.”

The study therefore recommended a plant-forward omnivorous whole foods diet, which consists of natural, unprocessed foods, rich in vegetables, nuts, seeds, avocados, olive oil, berries, and other fruits, along with whole grains and legumes. Animal foods such as wild-caught seafood, pasture-raised meats, eggs, and unsweetened dairy are also essential.

Zhanna Dart bragged about some harmful practices that should have raised alarms, such as her claims of not drinking water for six years – only consuming fruit and vegetable juice.

“Eating a healthy diet is not about strict limitations, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, improving your health, and boosting your mood.” Zhanna Samsonova once said.

Unfortunately, she doesn’t seem to have followed her own advice.

Zhanna Dart hasn’t been the only victim of this sort of extreme veganism. Last year, vegan Florida mother Sheila O’Leary, 38, was sentenced to life in prison after starving her 18-month-old son to death by feeding him only small amounts of fruits and vegetables.

The Cape Coral woman also was handed two 30-year sentences for aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter of a child, and an additional five-year term for child abuse and child neglect, to be served concurrently, reported the Fort Myers News-Press.

Judge Bruce Kyle ordered O’Leary, who was standing silently in a red prison jumpsuit, to have no contact with her surviving children.

Investigators said the O’Leary couple told them the family ate only raw fruits and vegetables, although Ezra also was fed breast milk.

The 18-month-old boy weighed 17 pounds — seven pounds below average — and was the size of a 7-month-old baby when he died in September 2019, a police report said.

An autopsy found little Ezra died of malnutrition complications.
