Who was Christopher Harriman? Man Shot Dead By Maine State Trooper at Old Orchard Beach Shopping Plaza

Christopher Harriman, a 38-year-old Limerick man, was shot and killed by a Maine State Trooper Tuesday night.

Harriman was brandishing a rifle and threatening to hurt himself, and others, at the Kennebunk rest area on the Maine Turnpike.

Authorities were called to the area and Harriman was shot and killed when he pointed a weapon at troopers.

State police said that shortly after 6:30 p.m., they received a call from a woman who said Harriman was making suicidal threats. The woman also told police Harriman was in a black Cadillac Escalade with an AR-style rifle at the Kennebunk rest area on the Maine Turnpike, and that he was threatening to hurt others.

When troopers arrived at the rest stop, Harriman was not there. The female caller then provided more information for law enforcement. Police officers from Saco and Old Orchard Beach responded, along with state troopers.

Police said Harriman led officers on a slow-speed pursuit. At one point, Harriman pointed his gun out of his car window towards officers, according to authorities.

When Harriman stopped in the Shoop ‘n Save parking lot, law enforcement tried to negotiate with him and encouraged Harriman to turn himself in.

Officials said Harriman then reached into his car, grabbed his gun and loaded a round into it. That is when MSP Trooper Ryan Phillips shot and killed Harriman.
