Desmond Rukevwe Emuobonuvie aka Mayor is a Nigerian student leader of the University of Benin who was shot dead by suspected cultists.

Mayor was allegedly shot and killed in Hall 3, one of the hostels attached to the University (UNIBEN).

According to reports, the gunmen stormed Hall 3 of the university campus on the evening of Monday, April 3rd 2023 and shot him three times in the face.

He instantly died from the point-blank gunshots, reports say.

Desmond Rukevwe Emuobonuvie was a final year (Level 400) student of UNIBEN studying for a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration.

He was a Kegite Chief (a socio-cultural group) of the school.

The incident has reportedly put fear in the heart of students of the school as they believe his murder was related to cultist activities.

On the morning of Tuesday, April 4th 2023 when reports of the murder went viral, there were claims that tension had taken over the school as other students were in fear for their lives.

On social media, terms such as Cultism, UNIBEN and Hall 3 took over the trends.

UNIBEN Statement on Murder of Desmond Rukevwe Emuobonuvie

The management of the University of Benin, Edo State has condemned the killing of a final year student of the school, simply known as Mayor.

Mayor, a student of the Department of Public Administration, was shot in the face at close range at 9 pm on Monday.

He was also the Kegite chief of the school.

The Public Relations Officer of UNIBEN, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, released a statement on Tuesday disclosing that the management was working closely with the police and internal security to apprehend the killer.

The statement read, “The management of the University of Benin has condemned the brutal and sad killing of a final year male student, known mostly as ‘Mayor’ (real name withheld) on the night of Monday 3rd March 2023.

“The gruesome shooting occurred in one of the halls of residence and was carried out by yet-to-be-identified gunman.”

Management is also working closely with the internal security units in ensuring that such dastardly incident does not occur again within the university’s premises,” the statement added.
