Police seek information from the public regarding persons, vehicles, or activity in the area that might seem out of the ordinary during the morning of Feb. 26.

By Saturday, they had pinpointed Shawn C Cranston of Corry PA as their main suspect.

“Police were first called to the Byler family residence in the 21000 block of Fish Flats Road in Sparta Twp. on Feb. 26 around 12:26 p.m. after Rebekah’s husband, Andy, and another person returned to the home and found her unresponsive,” PSP said in a bulletin.

“Rebekah was found with fatal wounds to her head and neck. She was six months pregnant at the time of her death.

“After arriving, police cleared the residence and later received a search warrant of the residence, outbuildings and surrounding area of the property based on the evidence,”

Shawn C Cranston was arrested and charged with criminal homicide, criminal homicide of an unborn child, burglary and criminal trespass, according to court documents.

He was denied bail at a preliminary arraignment early Saturday morning and is being held at the Crawford County jail with a preliminary hearing scheduled March 15.

No defense attorney was listed and a number listed for Cranston was not in service.

In their arrest affidavit, police Rebekah A Byler appeared to have cutting wounds to her neck and head, and a criminal complaint accuses Shawn C Cranston of killing the victim by “shooting her in the head and/or slashing her throat.”

“Everyone is stunned — this doesn’t happen here,” Spartansburg resident Charleen Hajec said of the brutal killing of Byler.

“Everyone is talking. It’s scary and frustrating.”

“The outside world doesn’t get in,” Hajec said. “To have something this tragic … it doesn’t happen here.”

In a post, PSP said Shawn C Cranston was being arrested after “an exhaustive five-day-long investigation,”

The Associated Press revealed that Shawn C Cranston murdered Rebekah Byler in gruesome fashion as she was found with cutting wounds to her neck and head.

Byler’s body was found in the living room of her home a few miles from Spartansburg.

Andy Byler, Rebekah’s body, reportedly found her body “a short distance inside” the home shortly after noon.

A woman described as a family friend, called 911 at 12:36 p.m. to report that she and Andy Byler found Rebekah Byler unresponsive when they arrived.

Trooper Cynthia Schick told The Associated Press on Thursday the investigation and autopsy have given police an idea of what the murder weapon Shawn C Cranston used may have been, but they do not have it in their possession.

Two young Byler children at the home were not harmed, Schick has said.

Arriving at the crime scene, state police officers found Rebekah Byler on her back in the living room.

Lindsey Smith, president of the women’s auxiliary of the Spartansburg Volunteer Fire Department, said everyone is “sad and shocked” by the tragedy.

“It’s not something that happens around here,” she said as she and other volunteers prepared food on Thursday afternoon at the department for its Friday fish fry. “We’re worried about our Amish.”

“They are a big part of our community,” Smith said. “They support us a lot.”

Katie Rhodes, a waitress at the Dutch Treat Restaurant in Spartansburg’s small business district, said people are still absorbing the shock of the news.
