Israel-Palestine conflict

Innocent bystanders such as Shani Louk Gaza and Noa Argamani now have to suffer the consequences of this everlasting Israel-Palestinian conflict.

But what is the background of this conflict?

The conflict can be traced back to the late 19th century, when Zionism, the movement that sought to establish a homeland for the Jewish people in Palestine, emerged in response to the persecution and antisemitism that Jews faced in Europe and elsewhere.

In 1917, during World War I, the British government issued the Balfour Declaration, which expressed support for the establishment of a Jewish national home in Palestine, while also promising to protect the rights and interests of the existing non-Jewish communities.

After World War I, Palestine became a British Mandate territory under the League of Nations.

The British faced increasing challenges from both the Jewish and Arab communities, who had conflicting aspirations and demands.

The Jewish immigration to Palestine increased significantly in the 1920s and 1930s, especially after the rise of Nazism in Germany and the persecution of Jews in Europe.

The Arab population also grew rapidly due to natural increase and immigration from neighboring countries. The land ownership, economic opportunities and political representation became sources of tension and conflict between the two groups.

After World War II and the Holocaust, which killed six million Jews in Europe, international sympathy for Zionism increased significantly.

In 1947, Britain announced its intention to end its mandate in Palestine and referred the issue to the United Nations.

The UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 181 (II), which recommended that Palestine be partitioned into two states: one for Jews (with 56% of the land) and one for Arabs (with 43% of the land), with Jerusalem under international administration.

The resolution was accepted by most of the Jewish leaders (although some rejected it as insufficient), but rejected by all of the Arab leaders (who considered it unfair and illegitimate).

On May 14th 1948 David Ben-Gurion declared Israel’s independence. The newly Jewish Israeli state and the Arab Palestine state have been at war since.
